Alfred K A fantastic action packed movie, with a smooth flowing plot, & great acting by Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, & Natascha McElhone. This movie was made before "artificial intelligence" was being used by the movie makers, hence, special effects were hardly used in making this gem. Watch this movie, you won't regret it. Rated 4.5/5 Stars •  Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/25 Full Review r96 s 'Ronin' was somehow an unknown to me as of weeks ago. I say that because... what a cast! How have I at least not heard of this in passing in all my years on this Earth? That plus the type of plot makes this right up my alley, on paper I'd love it and, pleasantly, in reality I do too. The film is particularly excellent visually, the cinematography is quality and the stunts are outstanding; even little things, like the initial old movie-esque end credit font is nice to look at. The score is also a plus point, which is evidently one of many bits that this has going for it. Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Natascha McElhone, Stellan Skarsgård, Sean Bean, Jonathan Pryce, Michael Lonsdale... as already noted, this 1998 release features a stellar cast list. De Niro is the main ace of the pack here, though Reno and McElhone are especially worthy of note. I will say that the ending is less entertaining than anticipated, which is a surprise. It's not a disappointing conclusion whatsoever, I still liked it, but it did feel like a weird sorta drop-off from what proceeds in terms of pacing and all that. Again, not really much of an issue to be honest. M Veteran thriller director John Frankenheimer conceives the last great hit of his career, and it's a shame it wasn't the actual last of his career, as that would've been a very high and respectable note. How he managed to sucessfully turn a script that was essentially Pulp Fiction clone with more action in the middle into this spectacular and breathtaking film is beyond me. It is very noteworthy that this was the last true action thriller made by Hollywood that features car chases with literally no CG at all, and it succesfully manages to be infinitely more pleasing and mesmerizing than all the others that came afterhand. I found Ronin to be a solid, gripping experience. The movie wastes no time throwing the audience into a world of shadowy mercenaries, shifting loyalties, and covert missions, all centered around a mysterious briefcase everyone is willing to kill for. The action feels grounded and intense, with practical stunts and a refreshing absence of CGI, making every gunfight and chase sequence feel dangerously real. Ronin isn’t flashy, but it’s built on craft, tension, and old-school action filmmaking.
