Critics Consensus

A messy but affecting college comedy, Roommates swaps big laughs for emotional sincerity, elevated by strong performances even as its uncertain tone keeps it from fully coming together.

The film won’t be remembered as a campus classic, or even in the upper half of college movies, but it’s also not hard to see a world where somebody watches it at exactly the right time in their lives and proceeds to cherish it forever. Go to Full Review

Questioning the moral fortitude of these comedies used to be something only critics did [...] Now 'Roommates' is getting in on the act and I respect the film’s sense of introspection. I just wish it had funnier jokes. Go to Full Review

[While the] framing device is purposefully heighted, Sandler and East are fantastic at bringing a level of emotional realism to Devon and Celeste’s complicated bond, which is two parts Girls, one part Single White Female. Go to Full Review

One of the twists in "Roommates" lies in a side love story that builds from the first episode and steals the show by the last episode. That’s the familial bond between brother and sister. Go to Full Review

av 8 @anagha.vinay Jul 6 The movie begins with two roommates at each other's throats and ending up in the counsellor's office. Then it goes off track with Celeste and Devon's (love) story. That was purely absurd for me. It lacked any sense of coherence and simply existed to make commentary which the writers thought were clever but could not include in any other manner. Celeste was beyond unbearable and I praise Chloe East and Sadie Sandler for delivering so crisply. It was entertaining but definitely not very memorable—neither in its story nor in its execution. See more Kayla D @kkdarlin Jun 30 The movie was dragged on and seemed like they didn’t take the time to really think through jokes. When I saw Adam Sandler I thought it was going to be written like his other films. Seemed like it tried to be Adam’s writing but was just a counterfeit they attempted to just added extra f bombs to try to be more funny. This could have been written so much better. Sadie did amazing tho! See more Jennifer S @Jenspective Jun 11 The worst part was Celeste taking Devon's boyfriend and rubbing it on her face like that. That was pure evil! Whyyy! I was genuinely happy for Devon and her new friend and roommate. And I hate how all the care, inside jokes and standing up for each other turned into a spiral of passive aggression and chaos. Speaking of chaos, I hate how it ended. See more Bill T. @btreakle Jun 1 “Roommates “ This film starring Chloe east and Sadie Sandler it’s a great film about girls graduating from high school and off to college trying to make friends and trying to fit in and all the things you would expect from 2 college girls. The story about two different girls from different backgrounds and family. It had some funny parts in it and had some dramatic parts in this film but I would say that this is a better film that I have seen from Adam Sandler productions in a long time. Enjoyed it very much and I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves to watch films about coming of age and going to college type films See more perla R. @lperlarosario May 31 really liked this movie great acting liked the whole story line alot. See more Brenden D. @calculatorman May 28 I really enjoyed this movie. It told a funny yet crazy story of two outcasts in their own respective ways. I thought Sadie Sandlers performance was great. The writing felt was good. The storytelling was on point. And even though it's not the ending I was expecting it was a good ending. It was a nice enjoyable college movie. I would recommend.
