Critics Consensus

This riff on The Graduate has a solid cast, but is too lightweight to fully register.

r96 s Quite the bore. Weird, too. It seems they came up with a mildly interesting connection to 'The Graduate' (haven't yet read or watched, fwiw) but forgot to add any further details. Even at just 1hr 30mins, this drags a bit. I just don't think this has enough meat on the bones to merit existing. Jennifer Aniston is likeable enough to stop events grinding to a halt, at least. Kevin Costner, Mark Ruffalo, Richard Jenkins and Shirley MacLaine appear alongside Aniston to make the cast list look good. Honestly, those onscreen are this flick's only redeeming factor, unfortunately. The rest of 'Rumor Has It…' is either bland or bizarre, if not both really. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Nicolas B I have to agree with the majority of the Reviewers here... Story from a romantic perspective just sucks .... She left him and cheated on him then came back saying I love you ... Worst parte he took her back gosh!! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Monika Creepy, of course directed by old man Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/24 Full Review Qin L Am I supposed to like a movie about a degen cheater family who then has another degen kid who cheats? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/17/23 Full Review Lori F Yep, Five Stars! Intelligently written, directed, and acted. I was quite shocked to see this film panned, particularly when hackneyed rom-coms get accolades. "Rumor Has It" takes the bold step of recognizing that women too, have rogue sexual impulses. Thus, three generations of women in the same family have put the moves on Beau (Kevin Costner), betraying either their kin or their betrothed. For me, everything about the movie signaled lightness, humor, and fun (especially Shirley MacLaine as Grandma!) such that I would not have imagined anyone could take it to be literally sanctioning any given behavior. (Frankly, even if it were, it would not be distorting real life very much--just look at the divorce rate.) Yet based on some reviews, one would think the film invites you to laugh at torturing animals. Per the current zeitgeist, some see Sarah (Jennifer Aniston) as a Me-Too victim, never mind that it is she, not Beau, who plants the first hot kisses, and then fully owns what ensues. Others manage to discern innuendos of incest even though Beau's possible paternity is roundly discounted and directly mocked. And others couldn't get past Jeff (Mark Ruffalo) taking back his fiancee after her fog-headed romp with Beau. Agreed, doing so might not sit well in a simplistic drama. But here, it's a thematically satisfying resolution to all that came before. Plus, how about the idea that he loves her? To me, the film's detractors are off, particularly if their critiques are "moral." What *I* saw was a wry and charming comedy, the product of an A-list cast and director. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review Rick A Cute plot device. Otherwise, terrible film, terrible acting. Lucky that Shirley McLaine was there, but not enough to make up for the rest.
