After Japanese forces torpedo his submarine during World War II, commanding officer "Rich" Richardson (Clark Gable) is placed in charge of the USS Nerka. The crew on board the Nerka -- led by Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster), who had been passed over for promotion when Richardson was brought in -- is openly hostile to their new commander, especially when it becomes clear that Richardson's sole obsession is finding and destroying the Japanese ship that sank his old vessel.

The tensions building among the crew on the boat, the professionalism of Lancaster as number 2 who deserves to be captain, the swashbuckling of Gable as a man on a mission, it is a great story and a testament to WWII submariners.

Moby Dick overtones in this highly suspenseful perfectly written and acted movie. The practical effects yes they are obviously model boats but it still works so well. Perfectly paced which is not always the case with older movies. A nearly perfect film.

It was an outstanding submarine movie! The realistic action scenes, the acting of 2 GREAT Hollywood stars as believable U..Navy captains, the tense excitement that made us feel we were "there", all combined to rate this 5 stars in our opinion. My Dad was in the Navy in WW2 from 1941-1945 ,signed up right after Pearl Harbor was attacked Dec.7th,1941, on a destroyer against Japanese and I remember him telling me this was the BEST movie about submarine warfare as it really happened just like that! He survived from 2 of his ships being sunk in battle but they destroyed several of the enemy! I take his recommendation since he actually was there and lived through the war!

Run Silent, Run Deep combines a personal drama about two egos in a World War II submarine setting, creating two exciting story lines. It has a confident, unhurried pace, yet contains few unnecessary elements. They really don't make movies like this anymore.
