Uni S I saw this highly underrated movie for the first time in 2024. I thought it was a brilliant romance movie with powerful, beautiful imagery and scenery, convincing acting, very unique plot, and nostalgia. It's not a movie that you see everyday, and it's not your run-of-the-mill romance movie. It captivated my interest through every moment. The production was impeccable. I highly appreciated the light music, the stunning visual effects, and the changing scenes. I added this to my list of favorite movies, and I highly suggest you give it a chance if you like romance movies! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Audience Member Sweet, and visually delightful. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A film full of gorgeous scenery tells a beautiful love story of the rights of a half-breed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Acting was terrible, laughable at times. Dumb plot, cliches galore. worst movie I’ve seen in a long time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/03/19 Full Review Audience Member LOVE THE STORY! Must see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member This was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The acting was subpar, the writing was uninspired, and the idolizing of white skin (a trope that plagues many potentially impactful minority films) was disappointing and problematic. The caricatured cast was cringeworthy, all that was missing was a villanous laugh from evil Dr. Reyes; who's character was unusually racist. I watched this movie, from the opening screen, under the impression that I would be touched by the unique history of Japanese immigrant plantation workers in Hawaii during the Spanish flu outbreak of the early 1900's. Instead, I was deceived with a shallow love story. A poor mixed Japanese boy falls in love with the blonde haired blue eyed daughter of the overtly racist white plantation owner for no other reason, having spoken to her twice, than her allusive and untouchable white aura. One can only grind one's teeth at the sight of the brown boy gazing through white lace sheers at the white girl in bed, restricted only to make contact with her bare foot; which he cradles in his hands like a relic. My recommendation is: If you'd like to relive centuries of racism against minority populations, one mustn't look too far. Simply turn on the news, don't watch this movie. It is an hour and 50 minutes of life you can never get back. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews
