Paul M This film felt let down by poor directing, clumsy camera work and editing. The acting was heartfelt if naive at times. But the core story is undeniable and an important contribution. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/01/23 Full Review Katrina G This is a refreshing, mature and tender story with beautiful performances and gentle direction. Highly recommend both the film and the web series. I love the main character Kaz (Elz Carrad) and his deep friendship with his childhood best friend, Anahera. (Āwhina-Rose Henare Ashby). I respect the nuance and complexity of trying to be yourself within a small town. This story has stayed with me. I also am a massive fan of the way that this film was created. https://rurangi.com/our-kaupapa/ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/23 Full Review Mariana A I cried through most of the first series...but I feel proud of this programme. It touches me on many levels. The characters are deep and well-played. It's a truely poignant story for these current times. I feel enlightened and uplifted. It reminds me to be tolerant and accepting of others without judgement or expectation....not easy but we lose nothing in being so, we only gain. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/01/23 Full Review catherine w Illuminating, generous, intelligent. I found it very moving. Elz Carrad is an extraordinary talent and the supporting cast was also impressive. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Scott A One of the most surprising, enlightening and real movies I have ever seen. Touches, informs, but does not totally opinionate on several under-informed issues in our wider society. This movie makes a difference. Scott A. Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The storytelling might be a little simplistic at times, but Carrad is magnetic, and the tentative rekindling of romance with Jem is a joy. Rated: 3/5 Feb 28, 2022 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times Carrad is terrific in the lead role. The films arguments are irrefutable. Humanity wins in the end. Rated: 3/5 Feb 26, 2022 Full Review Cath Clarke Guardian It’s a film that thrums with warmth and gives the rest a lesson in how to get trans representation right: all the trans roles are played by trans actors (and for good measure some non-trans – or non-specific – roles too). Rated: 3/5 Feb 21, 2022 Full Review Chris Wasser Sunday Independent (Ireland) A flawed yet admirable presentation. Rated: 3/5 Mar 4, 2022 Full Review Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) Max Currie’s film is an overstuffed hour and a half, yet the best scenes withstand the squeeze. Rated: 3/5 Feb 28, 2022 Full Review Emily Maskell WeLoveCinema It's a film that avoids the coming-of-age trappings so many films centred on young transgender characters rely on, and benefits from having transgender creatives at the helm.
