The set-up is fascinating, and a fine example of why VK Murthy's cinematography is so crucial to the storytelling in this 1962 classic. Go to Full Review

04/11/2010 Don't really like the story but the movie does provide the modern audience with a glimpse of the Indian culture in the 60's. See more 02/23/2010 An absolutely enthralling adaptation of Bimal Mitra's novel , with a very innocent portrayal of Bhootnath by the ace actor, Guru Dutt and the Tragedy Queen, Meena Kumari. I must say, the list of one of the most beautiful women on-screen, ever, has to have Waheeda Rehman, somewhere on the top. Somehow it seems that the films made in the yesteryears were more meaningfull and had more essence of " cinema" to it than many made in todays time which are ,but " movies" only. Sophisticated direction by Abrar Alvi and a really famous soundtrack , with vocal contributions by the very melodious and differently tuneful Geeta Dutt, Sahib, Bibi aur Ghulam is considered to be an all-time classic, and i agree with this title the film is honored with... See more 06/26/2009 A classic to the core. Great performances by Waheeda Rehman, Guru Dutt, Rehman, Sapru and Dhumal. Meena Kumari hams a bit, but then the rest of the cast makes up for it. See more 05/02/2009 Perhaps my favourite of all Guru Dutt's films, though Kaagaz Ke Phool vies for the same spot. Meena Kumari is extraordinary, the whole film is richly layered with metaphor, symbol, melodrama. Tragic and masterful. See more 04/05/2009 Based on Literary work... See more 03/27/2009 ***Minor spoilers Just finished watching it. I had heard alot about it, but got a chance to see today. I thought the film would revolve around neglacted woman's justificatioin fot adultery, but it does not. Its a strong emotional drama with with multilayer of story. Lastly, it has trademark Guru Dutta stamp on everything (although Alvi is credited for directing), hence be prepared for being depressed and dealing with disturbing theme/characters (which essentially makes it a classic).
