In this musical, sailor Steve (Barry MacKay) and Kay (Jessie Matthews), a poor girl who works on barges, are in love with one another. Meanwhile, both have aspirations: She longs to be a music hall star, and he dreams of being a financial guru. Quirky millionaire Anthony Gulliver (Roland Young) takes an interest in the couple and helps them both achieve their dreams, but as Kay skyrockets to fame, her relationship with Steve becomes strained, and she debates giving up her career.
