Critics Consensus

The Saint is watchable thanks to Kilmer and Shue, but the muddled screenplay stretches credulity.

Carol Buckland CNN.com The Saint isn't unforgivable, but it definitely falls short of being satisfying entertainment. Vichrae V Slick, fun, and thrilling...really lets Val Kilmer show his range. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/08/23 Full Review Thomas C Why is the rating so low? This is still one of my all time favorite movies. I watched this movie as a kid and still as an adult since it's still a great movie. The amazing scenery, the awesome soundtrack, the action, the beautiful romance between the two actors, I mean what's not to love? The critics are wrong on this one! I would say it's one of Val Kilmer's best movies with all the different personalities and characters that he plays, some funny, some who are romantic, and some who are comedic (the goofy character Val Kilmer plays in this movie haha). In addition, the romantic chemistry between Kilmer and Elizabeth Sue make it all that more of an amazing film. Elizabeth Sue is the most beautiful, pure hearted, innocent soul in this movie making her a great love interest for Val Kilmer's bad boy persona in the movie. Next, the tech gadgets that Kilmer uses in the movie reminds me of a James Bond movie and who doesn't love James Bond? Seriously though this movie was and still is such a great movie to watch which is why I'm confused at the low RT score. Do these critics just rush through these movies or critique movies on their bad day or something? As a 90's kid who watched this movie on VHS, there is a reason why I continue to return back to this movie and rewatch it as an adult. That reason is because it's a great movie. For anyone new to this movie, don't mind the critics of Rotten Tomatoes, this movie is a great watch, has great acting, great scenery, great romance, a great soundtrack, and many other greats. I'll continue to rewatch this movie throughout the rest of my life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member One of my favorite movies. Loved Val Kilmer in it especially how he played each character saint. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review jelisije j A very entertaining action flick that honestly really wouldn't work if Val Kilmer didn't steal every scene he was in. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I went with 2 stars for this movie, I only seen it once and idk if I would watch it again. I might though and I guess that I would reccomend it to others. I thought that it was a alright movie. I have not seen the 60's show, nor did I see the newer movie. It was like a James Bond type movie, but not as good or on the same level as James Bond though. I did think it was cool that he used catholic saint names as his covers, I also thought that his charaters that he went around in were pretty cool. Not much else to say about these movies, it passed the time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review lucca b It tries to be a compelling spy thriller with solid lead performances from Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue, but its promising premise is wasted with a convoluted and incoherent story, an implausible and ludicrous narrative, a messy and uneven tone, and some moments that haven't aged well.
