      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

A well-intentioned but frustratingly diffuse biopic, Saint Laurent proves an ironically poor fit for a look at the life of a fashion icon.

Alec B It's an admirably unconventional biopic filled with wonderful sequences of bold stylistic choices but it's also about 30 minutes too long. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/23 Full Review Terry S Beautifully filmed but puzzlingly assembled and a bit hard to follow. I came away knowing little more about him than I did previously. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/22/23 Full Review Georgan G The fashion designs were beautiful, but Saint Laurent spent his time either working or doing drugs & drinking. The film did not tell the truth of his death, it was way too long & not helpful to viewers trying to figure out where the plot was in the timeline. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/20/23 Full Review andy n Very long, very boring! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Starts like a documentary, turns into a fever dream, is almost saved by the clothes at the inevitable showing at the end but the fever dream on steroids (what is real, what is imagined) makes it a complete mess Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This French entry for the Oscar Best Foreign Language Film is no more a laboriously Felliniesque and stubbornly enigmatic rumination about the decadent desires of the iconic fashion designer than an adequately illuminating autobiography. Elissa Suh StageBuddy.com Saint Laurent, a vibrant, buzzy biopic of the visionary French designer, plays like an extended high fashion ad campaign, prioritizing corporeal movement aided and abetted by shiny textures, music, and distant gazes. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Moira MacDonald Seattle Times It captures the tense flavor of a particularly heady time in Saint Laurent's life, during which he struggled with addiction and illness and juggled relationships ... Rated: 3/4 Jun 11, 2015 Full Review Calvin Wilson St. Louis Post-Dispatch Saint Laurent was a truly mythic figure. It's a shame that Bonello's film doesn't do him justice. Rated: 2/4 Jun 11, 2015 Full Review Diego Batlle Otroscines.com A striking proposal (the YSL collections are appreciated in all their splendor) and only at times fascinating... [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Jun 22, 2023 Full Review Bernard Boo Way Too Indie A lot of the film resembles those trashy fall-from-grace rock 'n' roll biopics where the rock star gets lost in a whirlwind of sex and drugs, but Ulliel elevates the material by accentuating Saint Laurent's more sinister, predatory side. Rated: 6.5/10 Mar 14, 2019 Full Review Boris Nelepo Cinema Scope Just as Bonello's anachronisms blithely cross disparate eras, so Saint Laurent gainsaid the passage of time.
