Priyan B Now I know why it Is called as cult classic must watch movie Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review Audience Member Alaipayuthey - 10/10. It was the year 2000, and Mani Ratnam's new film had just released. I remember lining up at Elane Cinema (if you're from Scarborough, then I hope you remember this movie theater) with my parents to go watch the movie. I was not interested because I heard from other people in line that it was a romantic drama (thankfully, my stupidity would go away as time went on). Unfortunately, it was sold out for the night, and we had to revert to watching another movie. Months later, we ended up watching the movie on dvd at home, and I'm glad I did. From then on, Alaipayuthey has become one of my all time favourite films, and gets better each and every time I see it. Unlike a lot of films previous and post this movie, Alaipayuthey accurately captured the spirit and youthfulness of a young generation. It's my personal favourite of his "love trilogy" (Mouna Raagam and O.K. Kanmani being the others). And in true Ratnam fashion, rather than follow a traditional romantic drama formula, opted to go for a nonlinear format, mixing in mystery into an otherwise traditional romantic film. The focus on the bloom of love that turns into the complications of marriage is what makes this movie so awesome. The movie is as close to perfection as possible. Putting a debutant as your lead is a gutsy move, but Madhavan was incredible in this film, using his now trademark charm and wit to help elevate the film. Shalini delivered a career defining role and helped shape the way many actresses would act in romantic dramas from then on. Her way of holding back and allowing her character to mould the atmosphere of a conflict through just settling into the scene made her become of the most recognized actresses of her generation (side note, I had a huge crush on her growing up because of this movie). A.R. Rahman's soundtrack is literally perfect, and the songs are still as popular today as they were when they originally came out. P.C. Sreeram's cinematography is one of the great pieces of work in tamil cinema history in my opinion, while A. Sreekar Prasad's editing helps create so much layers for what could have been just a run of the mill film. Rewatch it now! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
