What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may be shamelessly derivative and overly nostalgic, but The Sandlot is nevertheless a genuinely sweet and funny coming-of-age adventure.

Joey H. Released on April 7th, 1993; directed and cowritten by David Mickey Evans, and with a beautiful score composed by David Newman; The Sandlot is a beautifully woven story about a man named Scott “Scotty” Smalls reflecting on what he refers to as the greatest summer of his life. The story is set in the summer of 1962 and takes place in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. Young Scotty Smalls is a smart but inhibited boy who has just moved into the neighborhood with his mother and new stepfather Bill and is being encouraged to get out and make friends, which he would like to do but considers himself too dorky and shy to do so. He knows an awful lot about science, but one thing he doesn’t know anything about, is sports. He doesn’t know how to catch, throw or hit a baseball and doesn’t even know who Babe Ruth is. One day he follows the neighborhood kids to a local sandlot to try and make friends with them despite not knowing how to play the game yet and ends up only embarrassing himself. But a few days later, Scotty’s neighbor Benjamin “Benny the Jet” Franklin Rodriguez, who is the leader of the Sandlot Gang and their best player, invites him to come and play with them due to them needing an extra player. He proceeds to introduce Smalls to the rest of the team; brothers Timmy and Tommy Timmons, Michael “Squints” Palledorous, Alan “Yeah Yeah” McClennan, Bertram Grover Weeks, Kenny “The Heater” DeNunez, and Hamilton “Ham” Porter. At first they think Benny’s wasting his and their time by inviting Smalls to play, but soon change their minds after Benny teaches Smalls how to play the game properly. Before you know it, Smalls is a part of the team and is soon making fast friends with all of them. Together they have many adventures over the summer both on and off the Sandlot; including going to the local swimming pool; challenging the local little league team, and going to a summer carnival. But the most challenging thing they face that summer is having to recover a valuable baseball signed by Babe Ruth, which Smalls had unintentionally stolen from his stepdad’s trophy room; after he ends up hitting it over the left field fence into the backyard of Mr. Mertle; which according to legend, houses a mean, vicious and gigantic dog monster known only as The Beast. Starring Tom Guiry as Scotty Smalls; Mike Vitar as Benny Rodriguez; Patrick Renna as Ham; Chauncey Leopardi as Squints; Brandon Adams as Kenny; Marty York as Yeah-Yeah; Grant Gelt as Bertram; Victor Dimattia as Timmy; Shane Obedzinski as Tommy; Denis Leary as Bill; Karen Allen as Scott’s mother; Art LaFleur as The Babe; an early onscreen appearance by Marley Shelton as Wendy Peffercorn; Will Horneff as Phillips; and James Earl Jones as Mr. Mertle; this film would go on to be considered one of the best baseball films of all time and a cult classic. Late film critic Roger Ebert considered this film to be a summertime version of A Christmas Story and gave the film three out of four stars. I personally consider this to be the best baseball movie of not only the 1990s, but of all time. I give this classic film a solid 10/10 rating.
