Critics Consensus

It's undeniably messy, but Savages finds Oliver Stone returning to dark, fearlessly lurid form.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Savages may come off choppy in the very beginning, but it does springboards to a really fantastical second half. Rated: B+ Sep 8, 2017 Full Review Scott Foundas Film Comment Magazine An unabashedly lurid sun-and-surf ménage-à-trois cum drug-running caper, with touches of Jacobean tragedy for good measure. Jun 20, 2013 Full Review David Thomson The New Republic The film would have been so much more interesting if the two men had been identical twins played by the same actor-like Jeremy Irons in David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers. Jun 17, 2013 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Viewer agony begins right near the start, as O describes her boffing sessions with the battle-scarred Chon: “I had orgasms; he had ‘wargasms.'” Yow. Haven’t Writers Guild of America memberships been revoked for less? Rated: 1/4 Oct 4, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review While the juicy performances and exciting meat of Savages are vicious fun, it’s a film whose feeble conceit undoes the pleasures of its base appeal. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 4, 2022 Full Review Johnny Loftus Decider Messy, violent, and often garish, but it's capably directed by Stone. Mar 19, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Timothy T This could've easily been a 90 minute movie. It still was better than I expected it to be. Blake lively was lovely as always and Travolta was good. Just enough violence to keep the story interesting. Salma Hayek was a delight. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review Frieda J Salma Hayek does a great turn in this movie and looks great. John Travolta plays an interesting character part. Benecio del Toro portrays such a twisted violent character. Honestly, I don't know how he can wind down after a day on the set playing that role. In general the film is way too graphically violent for my taste. Some of the premise of the story is pretty thin. 3 big stars named above captivated my interest enough to see it all the way through. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review Julie K I see this once a year .. love the cars, characters and fun .. salma and blake rocked it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/16/23 Full Review StephenPaul C The greatest 02 hours: and 10 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/23 Full Review Jackson F Like a music video that tries somehow to be "Tarantinoesque" but is mainly flat and mainstream in the end, stretched to 130 minutes. One of the worst I ever saw on big screen. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/23 Full Review Katie C This movie was very sexy like a fantasy and an exciting watch. Blake did amazing in her role.
