Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard A strange, quirky film with a moral that one would think the Japanese might accept more readily than the British. Rated: 2/5 Jul 8, 2011 Full Review Catherine Shoard Guardian A film that aims for quirk-cachet yet somehow winds up in that hinterland between actually funny and simply irritating. Rated: 2/5 Jul 7, 2011 Full Review David Parkinson Empire Magazine Witty, subtle and amusing satire on Japanese culture. Rated: 3/5 Jul 4, 2011 Full Review Rob Hunter Film School Rejects Rated: B Aug 10, 2011 Full Review Jamie Russell Total Film Totally oddball, this Japanese comedy's jokes occasionally get lost in translation, yet it moves effortlessly from colonic irrigation to crowd-pleasing, clam-packing sing-alongs with quirky verve. Rated: 4/5 Jul 12, 2011 Full Review Eithne Farry Electric Sheep With her mop of dark hair and her engaging face, Hikari Mitsushima is a bright presence. Jul 6, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews

isla s First off, this film is very slow in terms of plot pace. Its also not really very funny - the only amusing moment I could think of being when the female clam business employees are made to sing along to a song about working at the business, I assume intended to raise the spirits of said employees. From what I could tell its mostly about small town gossip and moving on from mistakes of the past. Its an alright watch, not great but not entirely awful, its ok, although im not sure I'd actively recommend it as such, probably not. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Sawako is a young woman who can't seem to settle in life. When we meet her, she is several years into life in Tokyo after leaving her small town home to follow a man. Since then she has had a series of bad relationships and worse jobs. Currently, she tests toys for a living, has awful depressing co-workers, and is dating one of her bosses - a single dad who enjoys knitting, and is intent on making her "okasaan" (mother) to his solemn young daughter. Sawako is uncomfortable around children. When Sawako's father becomes terminally ill from cirrhosis (a fate Sawako seems to be hurling towards herself as she's also constantly drinking), she returns home, accompanied by the boyfriend and small child, and has to face what she left behind. Along the way, Sawako decides what to do with her life. Though it's kind of a film about settling, and not the most uplifting or positive message, it is realistic and there is niceness to it. Though I'm far from a child person, even I found the relationship between Sawako and the sad child moving. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member "You're nothing special either. Now go, tough it out" is probably the most sensible encouragement ever given to a kid on the first day at school. Even though probably much of the humour doesn't make it into the English subtitles, it's still hilariously philosophical. Need to watch this again once my Japanese is good enough to appreciate it completely. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Banks on oddball being funny, when it is not inherently. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Some funny moments.... Another good performance by Hikari Mitsushima. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member A Quirky tale with a interesting and engageing lead from the girl but overall i didnt get invested with overall story which this goes to.
