Audience Member period pic+ horror= this one in a nod to my beloved hammer horror pix. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A period piece set in the 19th century sprinkled with a little blood here and there. The only notable thing in the flick is the presence of horror icon Tom Savini in the role of Prester John, a mythical Christian king, with magical powers. He's returned from beyond the eponymous sea to "share the suffering of Christ" with the world in the most literal sense. With good writers and good actors, this could have been a good film. It certainly has an interesting central idea, making a head-on attack on the theme of the necessity of suffering in Christianity and its forays into suffering inflicted on others in the name of salvation. Unfortunately, the acting in "Sea of Dust" is uniformly horrible and the screenplay barely coherent, zipping back and forth in the story as a plot device. There is some blood, but for the most part the story revolves around Prester John's control of people's minds, and the scenes in which he appears are ludicrous. Tom Savini is a wooden, boring actor, playing his role with all the skill of a ten year old in a school play. The action scenes in the film make up neither for none of it. Leave this one in the dust. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A mythological crusader king possesses the bodies of 19th century Germans to manifest his sadistic religious ideology in this world. An attempt to recreate a Hammer-type period atmosphere with community-theater level acting, gore, and a heavy-handed anti-religious message, but if you crave B-movie weirdness and can get through the first half, it turns into a crazed and confusing "dreams inside of dreams" battle for the protagonist's soul that should keep you watching. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member A film that is a throwback to the Hammer horror films of the 1960s. His loving attention to detail shows through in the set design and heightened visual approach to the material. While the film is kooky and ambitious, it ultimately suffers from tonal inconsistencies that prevent it from being a solid piece of entertainment.
