After heroic Coast Guard Capt. Jack Matthews dies in the line of duty, his son, Grad (John Derek), is adopted by Chief O'Malley (Walter Brennan) and his wife, Nora (Erin O'Brien-Moore). Grad grows close to their son, Hap (Richard Jaeckel), and both join the Coast Guard Academy. When Hap's girlfriend (Wanda Hendrix) reveals her love for Grad, the brothers fight. Expelled from the Academy, Grad goes to sea as an enlisted Coast Guard recruit to redeem himself with acts of bravery.
