Tim Brayton Alternate Ending Feels like an actual expression of transporting ecstasy, appreciating nudity and the fleshiness of bodies so much that it actually transmutes into a kind of worship. Martin F It only works if you see this movie as a moving homoerotic art photoshoot. There are some gorgeous imageries with tanned and sweaty butt-naked rolling around in a gorgeous coastal landscape, but that's it. There is a very strong dance number at the very beginning that lets you think the movie would be more crazy and provocative that it really is. The story is a take on a Christian martyr, Saint Sebastian. I'm not familiar with his story but whatever the choice they made with it, it was not enough for a full movie. Each segment is stretched beyond the tolerable. It can be the boys playing with insects, talking about their next orgies, some dance... most of the time, it feels too long. Sebastiane would have worked better as a short movie. So many elements work here: the visuals, the sexual tension, and this provocative juxtaposition of a Christian story with homoeroticism. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/28/23 Full Review Audience Member i saw thi smovie when it was released in NYC, back in 1978 or 1979. i wrote a review for my Latin compostion class. i have never forgottne this movie, or hte experience of seeing it in a sticky floored theater with a 4x6 screen. it was beautiful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Jarman's first feature is also his least accessible, a flagrant showcase for homosexuality conveyed through the death of famous gay icon St. Sebastian. Although his signature themes (isolated gay experience, opposition from outsiders, gratuitous nudity as a means of rebellion) ultimately yield lesser results than his later work, Sebastiane remains a singularly fascinating study of a historical figure told through artful, boldly anti-establishment means. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful to look at, authentic but, all the swinging dicks got pretty boring after awhile. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member It may be the most homoerotic film I've ever watched. Definitely worth checking out for some beautiful imagery and being filmed entirely in Latin. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member A bold film for the time it came out, but it seems like a pathetic excuse to explore the beauty of sweaty masculine forms as some cheap soft-core gay porn, with terrible acting from everyone (delivering their lines in a stiff Latin) and amateurishly photographed especially in the night scenes.
