Critics Consensus

Tender, charming, and well-acted, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is unfortunately hamstrung by jarring tonal shifts and a disappointing final act.

Tara Brady Irish Times Lorene Scafaria, the screenwriter behind Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, makes a charming directorial debut with Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Rated: 3/5 Jul 15, 2012 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard This is half a good film but hardly a wholly satisfactory one. Rated: 3/5 Jul 13, 2012 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) [It] unfortunately invites a lethal dose of scepticism towards its cutesy last-ditch matchmaking, obligatory road-trip plotting, and thinly funny jibes at the rest of humankind. Rated: 2/5 Jul 13, 2012 Full Review Iván Kazi EscribiendoCine Precise and exempt from superfluity. The film takes hold of you all of a sudden and won’t let go. Before you know it, your eyes begin to tear up, and a lump develops in your throat. Adam Q I wanted to like this movie but I found myself reaching for my phone to play games. There are some OK moments and it is well acted, but overall the plot is weak, it's dragged out, predictable and in parts, really slow. It's what I woidl classify as a background movie and didn't have the depth it needed. It's slow and dragged out but then very rushed in other parts, I didn't buy the change of feelings that fast. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Bruce L The film must have gotten made on the pitch of "man seeks meaning/love with one month left before the end of the world." So many possibilities. Unfortunately, none of them seized in this pointless execution. No sense - The depiction of the end of the world was, to start, completely unrealistic. Not that it wouldn't happen, but that the world would react in the way depicted if it did happen. The most obvious incongruity was people continuing to work at their jobs. It might have been fixed with a bit of time devoted to people being in denial or people wanting to generously help their fellow humans in the final days. No congruity - One of the first words that comes to mind in describing the film is random. A random dog is adopted for no purpose in the film except something cute to tag along. A random guy shows up with a little pointless vignette. Keira Knightly's boyfriend seems to be nothing but a pointless cartoon character. No arc - Steve Carrel starts as a depressed guy moping around and stays that way to pretty much the end. Keira is a flightly gal and pretty much stays that way to the end. How and why they form any relationship is a never clear starting with their very first bit of romance. No laughs - The feeble attempts at comedy are essentially weak slap-sticky sitcom stuff that really never land. No wry or witty dialogue. No truly funny characters (despite a few lame minor characters sprinkled in). Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review David P The argument is that the emotional tone of the movie changes too rapidly. To that I say, consider the stages of grief. This movie feels like a personal journey through those stages. Disbelief and denial - Going through the motions at life, at work ... Why would you go to work with the end of the world looming? Exactly. It's not rational, but neither is grief. More anger - Dodge trying to OD on cough syrup and chemicals. Anger/Bargaining - Seeing his friends, going to a party, and witnessing people comedically engage in outrageous behavior. Depression - Walking away from his friends, curling up at his place to wait out the days ... it's a surprise that he ever reaches out to help Penny in the first place! And yet, not so surprising in the depressed and detached way he moves through most of the middle of the movie. Acceptance - This was the best part. Making peace with his father. Not getting hung up about Olivia. Soothing Penny at the end, with the end of the world just moments away. One of my all-time favorite exchanges between two characters: Penny: But it isn't enough time! Dodge: It never would have been. If you're too hung up on the rapid emotional changes of tone, you're missing the point and the larger, lovelier story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Velda W Lovely cast. A bittersweet journey of self discovery, with the impending doom of planet earth. Who wouldn't want to be with their loved ones. Difficult choices. Last minute goodbyes. Emotional, light comedy. Loved the pooch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Aaron U The movie is slow, not a comedy or an action flick, but rather an oddball look at the end of the world. They try to inject comedy (that works) but then try to have deep moments (that don’t work). The movie can’t decide what it wants to be, which keeps it from being as good as it could have been. I give movies a fair bit of leeway, but the idea of flying a Cessna 152 to England is ridiculous, as is how they “recalculate” the asteroid’s impact and realize it will arrive a week early. It is as if the writers never looked at a map of the solar system and realized how fast the earth orbits the sun and how even a slight variation in timing would produce a near miss. A better writer/director could have fixed these problems with better dialog and a montage of our happy couple spending the week together before the show drops. You’ll find it interesting to watch once or twice, but too odd to warrant repeat viewings. The movie is a bit uplifting, but it is also depressing, reminding me of the book Childhood’s End.
