What to Know

Critics Consensus

Self-Medicated features some nice performances, but is too sentimental and unfocused to be a truly compelling film.

Monty Lapica has clearly found a new and successful form of self-medication; the art of film, starting with Self-Medicated. We should all have his strength and conviction. Audience Member My life parallels much of this movie and the emotional and cognitive nuances portrayed here are as real as life itself. This movie is very compelling, brilliantly written and directed with performances equal to the task. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member An amazing, honest film, Monty Lapica should be exceptionally proud of such a sensitively handled story. Great balance of humour and brilliant acting! The Hollywood reporter could not have put it better: "There was "a raw, unmannered intensity in Lapica's performance sets the requisite tone for the entire production. Self- Medicated is just what the doctor ordered." In places, very sad but nice ending! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie started out alright, I actually thought it had good potential, then it started to feel a little B movieish and then made for tv... it got really preachy and godly around the end and a little cheesy and unbelievable. I'm kind of split on how I felt about it. I was glad to read the tidbit at the end. Meh Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member A better choice for the lead role would have made this film a lot more watchable and more importantly, believable. Good story, but contained far too many scenes that could best be decribed as "dripping with cheese". Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member ''Hey, does this sound familiar? 'Oh jeez Dan, I'm a little worried about this Andrew, he's pretty big. Well don't worry Karen, Andrew wouldn't hurt a fly.. would you Andrew?' That's right asshole, I was right there. Right underneath your fucking nose, so write an essay about that, you piece of shit.'' - Well, despite the rather mediocre acting at times, I believe the effort put into this film was sort of decent. Definitely enjoyed this one. I think they portrayed the story well enough and that they had a solid approach covering it. It had the grip of trying to be powerful I'd assume, but It truly wasn't that bad. It's quite refreshing I have to say. Also, an interesting depiction of drug addiction. The cinematography in this movie is no doubtingly good too. I was pretty much entertained for a bunch of sequences throughout the movie and it actually kept my interest. Even being rated R, I'd say it's appropriate for any age. Overall, I thought this movie was generally quite decent. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member It had so much promise but the story was not solid and using marijuana is not that big of a deal. If he used crack, then the story would of made a lot more since. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
