Kevin K Selling Superman is touching, intimate and subtly provocative. It bravely and creatively explores human confusion, frailty and ultimately hope all while weaving the Man of Steel throughout. An accessible documentary that brings viewers into everyday living rooms and, interestingly, niche convention halls filled w comic book collectors. Due to the passing of a patriarch, this series opens eyes through the unlikely intersection of Midwest suburbia and a national underground economy. The Docu-series shines nicely in the questions it asks of the protagonist, especially about mental health. However, it shines brightest in the subtle questions it invites viewers to consider - questions of values, family, money, and ultimately of love. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/02/25 Full Review george f I am a Superman comic book collector and I was intrigued by this collection when it appeared a few years back. I am always interested in learning about the backstory of major collections when they come to market. However, I had no interest in paying to watch the documentary after viewing the trailers. I finally saw it on Amazon Prime and found it tedious. Why spend 4 episodes having Darren talk about the conflict between him and his Dad?? We get it. The dad was not a good father. It gets old. Darren also does not seem to take joy in being a collector. Just turn it over to Josh and Harley and let them dispose of it rather than re-living the conflict and torment. Good luck. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/19/25 Full Review Jamie S Having been a comic book lover and collector since the age of 5, with many stops and starts along the way, I was enthralled when hearing about this collection being revealed in the Metro Detroit area while attending local cons there. And then to my fanboy delight, I learned a documentary was being filmed chronicling this collection and its impact upon the surviving family members. As much as the fanboy rejoiced in my Inner Child, my heart empathized with the human interest flipside of the family as they leaned into the pain of telling their story and Dale’s unwillingness to admit and seek help throughout his life. I especially admire Darren leaning into the pain of this and being transparent about his difficulty with it and seeking to reveal what has been hidden in his father’s house, business and storage units all these years so it can be enjoyed and see the light in the hands of collectors who will appreciate the items and the story behind it. After the fourth episode, I did not feel emotional resolution for the family…but realized the story continues to evolve beyond the filming of the documentary. It is a work in progress for them. Just because they own Superman 1 doesn’t mean they don’t have to do the inner work like the rest of us. Thoroughly enjoyable documentary with a great cast of characters! Highly recommend whether you are a comic book fan or not. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Ann H This documentary covers so many interesting facets that I think almost everyone who sees it will find something in it for them. I was completely engaged throughout the entire 4 part documentary. The discussions surrounding Asperger's and its affect on the family dynamics were so incredibly honest. Heartbreaking at times. Hopeful in others. The family's desire to find healing is so relatable. Pushed into the comic book world due to having to handle the estate of a hoarder adds a new element to the story and has its own fascination. I hope you find this documentary as heartfelt and moving as I did. I absolutely loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Jennifer G Even for a non-comic book enthusiast I really enjoyed the show! I find myself thinking back about the people featured and wondering how they are doing now -which you know means that it had me hooked! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review Joleigh S I loved the rich story entertwined with history, personal growth, healing, humanity and the stories that stemmed from the original story. So much more than just about selling Superman! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
