In a chilling portrayal of a Mexican border town, Lourdes Portillo investigates the rape and murder of over 250 young women, most of whom were factory workers, or "maquiladoras." The authorities make little effort to resolve the crimes against the women, content to imprison those who confess under duress. Portillo speaks to the relatives of the victims and to the authorities who have failed them. Rather than finding the culprits, she explores a society in which such crimes are prevalent.

There's obviously a stark, chilling story here, but Portillo is a sloppy moviemaker. Go to Full Review

An important film, worthy of the Special Jury Prize it won at last year's Sundance Film Festival. Go to Full Review

Lourdes Portillo's elegiac Seorita Extraviada documents with low-key persistence the conditions in Ciudad Jurez that make some say, 'There is no better place in the world to kill a young woman.' Go to Full Review

The victims of the crimes described in Senorita Extraviada cry out for justice. Just as their stories cry out for a more-focused, less superficial documentary than this one. Go to Full Review
