Lourdes Portillo was nominated for an Academy Award for "La Ofrenda: Days of the Dead" in 1986. Her newly acquired honor led her to her next few projects including "La Ofrenda: The Days of the Dead" (1989) and "Vida" (1990). She continued to work in film in the nineties and the early 2000s, directing motion pictures like the documentary "The Devil Never Sleeps" (1994) with Lic. In addition to her directing, Portillo also appeared on-screen in "Declarations: Essays on American Ideals" (PBS, 1993-94). Most recently, Portillo directed "Senorita Extraviada" (2003). Lourdes Portillo died on April 20, 2024 in San Francisco, CA at age 80.
