Critics Consensus

Grim and morose, Seven Pounds is also undone by an illogical plot.

Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Not only is the idea so far out to be only fiction, it is so sadly executed that you can be pardoned for thinking Will Smith has remade Hancock, with less booze, more heart but as many powers and apparently as much grief. Rated: C- Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Ian Freer Empire Magazine A collage of strong scenes, dull bits, good filmmaking and a dissatisfying emotional payoff. A laudable attempt to tackle heavyweight subject-matter that ends up just being heavy weather. Chris A Critics are clueless. This is a powerful movie, it keeps you guessing, it makes you cry and provokes thoughts. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/30/25 Full Review EGMR 9 ...I just didn't have the heart to sit through this one in its entirety. Will Smith's performance as the lead is certainly committed, but the script didn't give him enough material to work with - much like "Collateral Beauty" several years later. The story didn't feel all that intriguing to me either, and while I give it props for originality, it still leaves so much to be desired. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/28/25 Full Review Gregory S If you want a heart wrenching movie, then this is it. If you are not crying by the end, then you are not human. One of Smiths most underrated performances. In fact, everyone in this movie is absolutely incredible. You can really tell that it meant something to them, or to someone they cared about. This is my 5th watch and it’s incredible how each conversation had in the movie hits different with each watch. Great movie, the critics are ignorant. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Riccardo D An interesting idea. Don’t really understand the harsh criticism that the movie received. Is it the best or perfect? Surely not. But while it does not explain things willingly until the end, key aspects of the plot can be guessed early on. Like the grief moving Will Smith’s character actions. Actors and soundtrack are good. As is the relationship between the two. Aspects can feel far fetched but nonetheless the film has the guts to try something new and powerful. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/25 Full Review Luke r Such an underrated gem. I feel like some of the reviewers of this film never understood it. One for the ages. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/02/25 Full Review Mini L One of the most touching movies I’ve ever watched. I cried so hard four times and was in pools of tears by the end! The characters were so well portrayed throughout the film. The plot did leave me questioning what on earth is going on for ages, but I trusted that I’d find out soon enough. Obviously you piece together clues and guess what happened which makes it more engaging throughout the movie. IMO the wait was worth the big reveal at the end. Not sure why it was rated so low by critics. I guess maybe some people like to get a linear storyline with answers sooner than later. I don’t think I’ve cried so hard so many times at the end of a movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
