Nick M "Sex sells" is an aphorism that has been true for a long, long time. Giving double meaning to the phrase, this picture made a lot of money trading off of its name alone. It was a big hit in its day, and seems to be admired in the 21st century for the audacity it took to release a film with this title in 1920. Unfortunately, audacity doesn't always signal quality. Sex is really nothing more than yet another morality story from this era, denouncing the evils of infidelity, the immorality of actors, and of selfish life philosophies. It's serviceable, but it isn't one of the better films of its type or of its day. It's difficult to judge the acting and writing as a whole because the only surviving print that seems to be available online is of such poor resolution and is so washed out that expressions are often completely indiscernible, and intertitles illegible. What can still accurately be assessed is the fairly predictable story sequence and the holier-than-thou tone of the overwritten, mealy-mouthed moralizations in many of the intertitles. "Along the Highroad of Surfeited Folly, where each Milestone marks the burial place of a wasted month." Bombastic nonsense. "The standards of morality eternally demand that the naked soul of Sex be stripped of its falsehoods--which can only be atoned for through bitter tears." Blather. It reminds me of the pedantic proselytizing found in many of D. W. Griffith's pictures from the previous decade, which was never representative of his talent as a director. This is not among Frank Niblo's best work. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review America W Absolutely a great watch, I'm not even really into the silent era of films but this one had me hooked! Just as much as things have changed, many things have stayed the same too! Remember, if you're a floozy with other peoples husbands now, some day you may be that spouse getting cheated on!
