Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It really means well and it's a really important topic, but it's told in a frustrating, ham-fisted, flag-waving, clichéd way. Sep 14, 2019 Full Review Nell Minow RogerEbert.com Sincerity of purpose, the best of intentions and brief appearances by top talent cannot save a real first pancake of a script in SGT. Will Gardner. Rated: 2/4 Jan 11, 2019 Full Review Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter The film endlessly traffics in the sort of clichés endemic to the genre, from its gung-ho country music soundtrack to its frequent combat flashbacks illustrating the horrors of war. Jan 10, 2019 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Heavy-handed clichés overwhelm the heartfelt intentions of this drama meant to salute veterans battling physical and emotional wounds as they return home. Jan 11, 2019 Full Review Mark Dujsik Mark Reviews Movies It's a mess of uncertain purpose, jarring tonal shifts, and melodramatic gimmickry. Rated: 1/4 Jan 11, 2019 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Its honesty and introspection, and the urgency of the topic, make it worth a look. Jason M As a veteran, this is a topic that hit home hard! It may not be the best movie, but the topic is hard, and many veterans suffer. As a nation, we need to wrap our arms around veterans and continue to keep the our promise to them! “The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.” — General Douglas MacArthur Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/03/24 Full Review Audience Member The grand canyon sized discrepancy of critics and real people, well says enough. Though I dont know this man Its likely a very real account of many soldiers' story, heartful and heartbreaking. I felt like a witness who wanted to jump in to help-help him be accepted for coming out of hell, and for me and us as a whole who are comfortably conveniently numb to the lack of understanding and support each so deeply deserves. With all we go through as a nation and family and individual- it is these men and women that make America great, not others. Leave no man behind- I wish this nation had the same constitution of heart that our soldiers DO. You critics forgot you're human 1st. Have we? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie tells a great story that needs to be heard. It's too bad the professional critics don't give it the credit it deserves. I recommend this movie for anyone that loves our country. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Brings much needed attention to the struggles our service men and women face during transition. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/20 Full Review Audience Member Very good. If your looking for something to pull at your heart strings then watch this. Lots of silver lining situations going on and great acting. Definitely a sleeper. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/23/19 Full Review Audience Member I gave the movie 5 stars. I wish I could give the same to the treatment of our veterans. We must do better by them. Our veterans deserve the absolute best care for their entire lives. We are failing our veterans and it sickens me. One homeless hungry veteran is unacceptable yet we have thousands. We live free because they are brave.
