Leave your troubled past behind and get a fresh start in the hidden enclave nestled in the French Pyrenees, where magic and witchcraft are woven into daily life. This remote region attracts a motley crew of people -- including priestess Anaiya, sorcerer Uranie and chaos magician Iranon -- who eschew modernity and try to transform from their former troubled personae, embracing the local occult-tinged faith. Former Hollywood filmmaker Richard Stanley finds himself in the region, too, after losing everything in the film industry, self-manifesting as a spiritual leader in the community. When shocking allegations of Stanley's past domestic abuse are brought into light, his local admirers must confront the true nature of their beloved chosen home. Is the region truly transformative or have they been ruthlessly manipulated by a false prophet?

Olivia Popp Cineuropa It is simultaneously a unique portrait of a region full of engrossing magical tradition and a biting look at Stanley through his own words, but the narratives compete for attention, making both feel somewhat incomplete. Nov 28, 2024 Full Review Max Borg Loud and Clear Reviews Rarely has a filmmaker questioned their own work’s reason for existing as thoroughly as Otso Tiainen does here, with the second half turning into an introspective journey down an increasingly terrifying rabbit hole. Rated: 4/5 Nov 13, 2024 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed The fact that it starts off one way and changes direction once new information is found shows professionalism from the filmmakers and a honest search for truth. Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Tiainen copes impressively with a film which swerves far off its original course, and what emerges is more interesting for the diversion. Rated: 4/5 Oct 31, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net A rich and powerful documentary that stands proudly alongside films like Heart of Darkness and Burden of Dreams as an ethereal and revelatory introspection on life, faith, filmmaking, and abuse that becomes a part of us and never lets go. Rated: 5/5 Oct 31, 2024 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome Shadowland allows the web to untangle itself and the reality to fully differentiate itself from the fantasy, while still being respectful to those whose lives have been upended by these “spiritual narcissists.” Oct 21, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
