What to Know

Critics Consensus

Although it never comes close to the classic capers it seeks to emulate, Sharper is just sleek and clever enough to pass the time.

Linda Marric The Jewish Chronicle While Sharper’s genius resides in its ability to successfully outwit its audience, at no point does it feel laboured or in the least predictable. Rated: 3/4 Feb 22, 2023 Full Review Tamma Moksha The Hindu Told from multiple points of view, the low-brow twists and non-linear narrative in this tale of deceit and manipulation — with the rules changing every few minutes — leave us disappointed. Jun 11, 2024 Full Review Robert Roten Laramie Movie Scope The movie ends with a very satisfying conclusion. The fact that it is so satisfying more than makes up for the fact that the story's resolution is not very believable. Rated: B Jan 27, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …at some point in Benjamin Caron’s film various characters are seen using, and being satisfied by, Apple’s patented brand of ear-buds, and that’s about as close as Sharper gets towards social commentary… Rated: 3/5 Oct 31, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Sabrina M Absolutely amazing! The entire cast rocked it. The way the movie went back and forth was so interesting. Kept you on your toes the entire time. Sebastian goes between devilishly charming to bratty and he does both so well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review michael d The plot is fantastic, the performances range from good to superb, the direction is Good. I really enjoyed it. The script though good needs some tightening up in places, but the screenplay is where this movie really lets down the production. The plot is quite an intricate tale of intrigue, romance, deception, misdirection and drama. To do this well is difficult, and to do it convincingly requires a very tight screenplay with details of logic, procedure, and continuity dealt with exceptionally. Though there are not so much 'holes' in the plot, it creaks and groans at the seams here and there where the bonds of the story are not quite so tight. Very strong performances all around though. Sebastian Stan who plays Max is good but not quite up to the requirements of this role. He is given an awful lot to do in this production, with a range of demands on his capabilities that slightly outweighs his deliverable repertoire. He handles some aspects excellently while others not quite well. Given the script has some limitations in areas of his involvement, it is difficult to say if this is due entirely to his shortcomings, but certainly these are areas of weakness the movie displays. Julianne Moore gives a good performance, but still doesn't seem quite as engaged as she's really needs to be to bring off this one with the engrossment needed for a stellar accolade. Particularly as her role really does place great demands on the delivery for her character. Brianna Middleton - Sandra, Justice Smith - Tom, John Lithgow - Richard Hobbes are fantastic, and the minor cast also do valid service to the requirements of the roles they hold. You may find parts of the film dragging as I did, and irrespective of how much I was enjoying the movie, this is an aspect that really shouldn't be present in a film of this caliber... that is, given it is offering so much. The failings should have been dealt with and eradicated long before production as without doubt, minor changes in this one could have made it Oscar worthy. The length is about right for a film of this genre, and I was pretty much immersed, from beginning to end (aside from the issues I've already highlighted). Definitely recommended viewing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Mary S Solid performances all around. The ending felt a bit implausible, but satisfying enough that I didn’t mind. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Joanna F Great cast… the storyline has potential…. But it's a total waste of time… you can see the ending from a mile away. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Avindu G Great story telling while climbing up the chain of con artists. Great visuals that fits well with each moment that captures the emotional dilemmas of each character. Equally good camera work capturing each character's and situation's nature. Excellent audio and video effects. Background music is refreshing. Unique dialogues that awakens consciousness of audience to stay focused on the story. Plot is certainly thrilling yet the final act by the aggrieved party didn't do much justice to the story up to that point. However the conclusion is satisfactory and anticipated yet presented in the most twisted and unexpected way. That's what make Sharper a must watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Alex M To be fair, this is not my type of movie. I thought this might be a heist film or something similar, but it is very much a drama, I guess maybe you could call it a mystery/thriller, but it felt like a slog. I'm sorry, but it felt quite melodramatic (Stan is so over-the-top it was tough for me to watch) that if I'm John Lithgow, I'm wondering if I've been cast in a two-hour episode of Days of Our Lives. Sure, there were unexpected turns, but I think a lot of it was telegraphed, even if you weren't looking to spoil the movie yourself; no reveals were really earth-shattering.
