Tani B One of the few films I can watch over & over again and still find something new, I always cry even tho I know the ending but this isn't a sentimental mushy story, it's gritty when it needs to be and opens your eyes to the the atrocities of war & the sacrifices people/families are forced to make. It is a beautiful film with stunning cinematography. Besides the obvious, ie James Stewart being one of the finest actors ever, the scenery is stunning, and the entire cast do such an ace job that you truly believe they are a real family. The horrors of war, and the hatred that existed amongst fellow Americans is told on such a personal level, he wanted no part of the war but was dragged into it. It leaves me wondering how we've come so far from then but find ourselves back to a similar divide. I love this film, I rarely want to watch it with anyone - it's one of those films I immerse myself in 100%. One of my top 10 all time faves. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Newell F This is a must watch classic film! It treats the horrors of war well without having to resort to extraordinary violence. It also models well how a family can support each other in good times and bad. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/29/24 Full Review CodyZamboni Movie features one of James Stewart's best , most committed performances, as he goes from pacifist to pissed off protective father. As the tragedies pile up, watching how Stewart responds gives this movie grit and insight. He anchors this compelling Civil War story with many famous faces in supporting roles, with a standout being George Kennedy as battle weary Yankee commander. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review Garth A One of the best American films of all times. It is interesting that the part of "Boy Anderson", was played by child actor Phillip Alford, who played Jem Finch, the son of Atticus Finch (played by Grefory Peck.) Though Alford only was in a few films, both "Shenandoah" and "To Kill A Mockingbird" remain among the best films dealing with race and American history. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/10/23 Full Review Sean A Overall, a mediocre film. Too many themes are pursued at once. The film starts as a comedy and then forces itself into a tragedy in the last 15 or so minutes. The foreshadowing of tragedy was poorly done. The film is too cute and sentimental for that sort of twist. Without Jimmy Stewart's humor, this film would have one less star from me.
