David Stratton The Australian Director Shinji Higuchi does a routine job with the familiar elements and the film is strictly for ardent fans of this sort of thing. Rated: 2/5 Aug 25, 2023 Full Review William Bibbiani TheWrap There’s no winking self-awareness here, no digital recreation of costume seams or slightly visible wires, just an appreciation for the fact that the original series — colorful, imaginative, ambitious — had an aesthetic that worked in its own way. Jan 11, 2023 Full Review Sarah Jane Austin Chronicle Come for the epic ass kickings, stay for the silliness of giant monsters battling a huge metal man. Rated: 4.5/5 Jan 5, 2023 Full Review Joshua Polanski Boston Hassle The camera is put in angles you’ve never seen before, at least not in a superhero movie. Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Paul Lê Bloody Disgusting It’s a wonderful example of how to do retro-modern storytelling. Rated: 4/5 Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness The effects are solid, capturing the classic tokusatsu style and texture via CG, creating moments that feel genuinely fun and exciting to behold. But that’s not enough to keep the audience engaged for the near two-hour runtime. Rated: 3/5 Jul 11, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Fruth Perfect! So glad I got to see it in theaters!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/23/23 Full Review El Goog Rotten Tomatoes sucks, but Shin Ultraman sure doesn't! DC & Marvel should be ashamed, as this is one of the best superhero movies since 2008 when Iron Man plus The Dark Knight came out, & everything got all silly in Hollywood. Legendary should be ashamed too, as this is better than the entire MonsterVerse (I like all those movies, especially Godzilla 2014) & is one of the best kaiju movies ever made. I loved the plot, the backstory, the themes, the optimistic tone, the direction in general, the cinematography, the action choreography, the characters (especially Ultraman!!!), the acting, the cast, the Easter Eggs, the actually-good humor, & the psychedelic art direction. This movie made me laugh, cry, had me on the edge of my seat, & even surprised me with inversions on plot-beats from the original show. I wasn't too hip on much of the visual & aural aesthetics being rip-offs from the original show when I watched the trailer, but it worked really well in the movie, & I'd say more-so than the retro rip-offs in Shin Godzilla (even though I like that movie more). I'm kinda on-the-fence with the music, though some of it was kinda hokey, & some of it worked stupendously. Some of the editing in the beginning is a bit too rapid-fire & suffers from too much text on-screen, as well. I also wished some bits of the mysterious backstory regarding the intergalactic war between the Ultraman-people, the Zarab-people, & the Mefilas-people (Was there actually a war, though? That's what I gleaned from it, but I coulda been jumping to conclusions) or at least a bit more of the inner workings of their societies was expounded on just a touch more, though. Shin Ultraman is a cinematic triumph & one hell of a good time, as well as a good movie for people who like to explore the themes & ramifications of geo-politics, quantum physics, war, environmentalism, heroic-masculinity, some philosophy stuff, ethics of laws, industrialism, kinship, humanism & more. It's also a great companion piece to Shin Godzilla. I seriously can't stop thinking about this movie & can't wait to see it again!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review R. Baxter S Seeing Ultraman on the big screen was fun and it was a great throwback to the 1960s TV series I enjoyed watching reruns of when I was very young. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review jereme b I like godzilla and all the different versions of ultraman I saw all the others on TV on the tokoshoutsu channel on tubi TV channel Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Gregory It was definitely a throwback to my childhood. Love watching Ultraman on TV after school and fell in love with the monster verse. He was a superhero something to look up to and to look forward to! Loved his "costume" to a simpler design and how powerful he actually was! Loved the take on the aliens in the movie too, they were fantastic! What I didn't like was that Ultraman didn't make any sounds and didn't fight enough monsters! The human characters were kinda uninteresting at best. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Dean D 601K in 2 days of screening in the US. Woot! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
