Audience Member Less dramatic than the other Shinsengumi film 'When the Last Sword Is Drawn', and offers a fast-paced storyline. However the sword fights seems lousy and not choreographed well enough compared to other Chambara films I saw. The historical part of the story is not told well if you're not Japanese like me who is unfamiliar with the Boshin War and the Meiji Restoration. Given that, Mifune's Shinsengumi is the best biography of the radical police group to date. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Samurai, Seppuku, Beheadings, and Mifune--Powerful historical drama with flawless Mifune!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member this was a great samurai film. the shinsengumi are a well documented group of loyalists to the shogun in japans history and this is a great film about them. mifune was brilliant as he always was. you get to a point in this film where one moment you are rooting for mifune and his followers, and the next minute you are rooting against them. you sort of go back and forth throughout the film. in the end, i was saddened by the outcome but i was ok with it. really a great film.
