Martin P Truly appalling, and not in a good way... Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/12/25 Full Review BRizz 2 Shiver Me Timbers (2025) is yet another horror entry in the oddly expanding Popeye horror subgenre—yes, you read that right. Following Popeye’s Revenge and Popeye the Slayer Man, this third iteration adds to an already oversaturated and unnecessary trend that stretches the character far beyond recognition. The film is based on the iconic cartoon trio—Popeye, Olive Oyl, and others—but takes a bizarre, unstructured detour into slow-burn horror with little payoff. Unfortunately, the director misses the mark entirely, choosing to focus the majority of the film on long, drawn-out beach conversations that rob the movie of any momentum. For a horror film, there’s a baffling lack of tension, suspense, or scares. Instead, the movie leans heavily into dialogue that feels both excessive and irrelevant to the plot. The performances from the cast are subpar. None of the characters are developed enough to make an impression, and you’re left with no sense of a “final girl,” “final guy,” or even a central protagonist to root for. It’s an ensemble of forgettable characters who seem more interested in talking about nothing than surviving a horror scenario. When Popeye finally appears, the reveal is both disappointing and unintentionally comedic. The attempt to mimic the cartoon’s look while turning him into a monstrous figure results in a design that feels neither scary nor imaginative—just messy. To its credit, Shiver Me Timbers isn’t as painfully bad as Popeye the Slayer Man, but that’s hardly a compliment. Ultimately, the film lacks creativity, cohesion, and the basic elements of horror that make a genre film fun or frightening. With no real fear factor, no standout performances, and no narrative drive, Shiver Me Timbers sinks quickly—and not even spinach can save it.
