Audience Member The movie has many interesting things to delve into even in such a short story line. I loved most the contrast shown in the road scenes. Before the protest, the roads and surroundings were left noticeably blank. I also liked the mere distraction scenes telling about the future state of some protesters that appears all of a sudden in the main narrative. Mob reaction and movements were closely caught that makes it feel more real. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Part documentary, part-dramatised; based on real events but with fictional characters, Kieslowski begins by charting the rapid ascent of a Communist official between 1968-1981. An increase in the price of foodstuffs causes strike action and the workers mobilise upon the offices of this official, who's powerless to act as mob violence follows, only quelled by police brutality. Kieslowski jumps between the past and present, freezing upon images of various protestors then cutting to their fates - one woman is sentenced for vandalism, one man is savagely beaten by police, one man becomes integral to the Solidarity movement in Gdansk. Kieslowski documents historical change; these events inspired the growing rebellion to Communist rule, frustrated by the intransigence and repressive nature of the state. As you'd expect, he handles the precarious balance of truth and fiction with such aplomb. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member An extra short film on the Greek DVD of Veronique and what a minor achievement. The alternative sequences of the worker's labor on a factory and the business management is shocking and lauded with anger on my side.Poor chaps, letting these capitalists ruin your brains and dealing with your fees.Evil bureaucrats I say and that portion would be more effective in Kieslowski's Camera Buff. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member An enjoyable, documentary-style film. It all takes place in a day, at one location; but the way it is told makes for an engaging film. It is daring- like some of Wajda's films- but is very even, bringing out some more subtle aspects of the conflict between Solidarity and the massive, seemingly invincible communist government.
