Critics Consensus

Shot Caller's weakness for action movie clichés is capably offset by strong work from Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the central role.

Hannah Strong Little White Lies It seems to glamourise the violence within the prison system, falling back on lazy stereotypes and suggesting that shivving your way to the top can be excused if you have a noble aim. Rated: 2/5 Dec 17, 2017 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) On many levels, Shot Caller makes no sense whatsoever. Rated: 2/5 Dec 15, 2017 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) The film is aiming for tough edges, but it's essentially very vanilla. It feels like the male equivalent of a spa day—go to prison and get the body that you always wanted. SIBIRIAK . You got to know what the film is about if you are going to spend 2 hours of your life watching it. And, of course, the advertisers and promo teams don't care about you. They always will push it as a film themed the way by which is going to draw the most attention. That's life. SO, what is the film about? That's not a film about prison, not about portraying the prison life, not about portraying procedures of law enforcement agencies. And it's not about laws of physics, for that matter, and whether you can make a weapon out of something or knock out a big dude. It's about life and life's choices. It's just a drama. It's about a man that was put himself in unbearable circumstances where he had no choice rather than climbing on top of the food-chain. It doesn't matter if in a real-life a convict can be a bipartisan in a prison life or can not. Well, it does matter. But it's another matter. If it bothers you very much don't watch this film. And if you did watch it, file a complain to Screenwriter's Guild. But if you are going to watch it, try focusing on the story of a man's life. There are many thing bothers me as well in this film. For example, how big the money should be for an actor of you know which heritage to put those ink on his body for a role. It also bothers me how ignorant an author should be to use context of people's ruined lifes and theme of a certain important issues without a proper research. Unrealistic scenes bother me when a convict had to put something into his bowel instead of putting it into his underwear or something just to bring it outside at the courtyard. But somehow he managed to go through arrest, and hearings, and incarceration without a single cavity search. But I choose to not focus on that so my 2 hours spent will not be in vain. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/24/25 Full Review amirsalar t real prison life and how it pushes people to become what they didn't know they had inside. film aims for showing a real life behind the bars which every now and then gets stocked with cliches. storyline is smooth and easy to understand but enough to feel what scenarist had in mind. it doesn't embrace the gang life ,instead tries to show what can be the best possible outcome or faith of those who choose this path, Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Kurt S Having worked in 4 prisons for 9 years, I can say this movie accurately portrays real prison life almost to a "t". Good, believable, storyline. Good acting with a solid cast. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Ari V Not without a few good scenes (e.g. the Bottles stuff), but ultimately it's fake grit and realism. The victim/warrior dicotomy alone clearly demonstrates this. It's victim/monster. At every level of this deeply rigged game. Pretence to anything milder and neater is just that. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review steve d I liked it a lot. One mistake can change your life forever. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/26/25 Full Review Jonas B A gripping build-up that falls short. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
