Shot Caller

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Shot Caller's weakness for action movie clichés is capably offset by strong work from Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the central role.

Hannah Strong Little White Lies It seems to glamourise the violence within the prison system, falling back on lazy stereotypes and suggesting that shivving your way to the top can be excused if you have a noble aim. Rated: 2/5 Dec 17, 2017 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) On many levels, Shot Caller makes no sense whatsoever. Rated: 2/5 Dec 15, 2017 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) The film is aiming for tough edges, but it's essentially very vanilla. It feels like the male equivalent of a spa day—go to prison and get the body that you always wanted. Jun 9, 2024 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews The better-than-average vibe is heightened and perpetuated by Coster-Waldaus terrific turn as the movies complicated central character... Rated: 3/4 Apr 28, 2022 Full Review Dan Buffa KSDK News (St. Louis) It's a sinister watch and doesn't play out like you initially think, but the surprises and performance from Coster-Waldau helps the film stick its landing. Chris F Really quite good, and I was thinking about it a lot the next day. Hard to know or even imagine what one would do in these situations. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Raymond R Frankly, this felt like a glorified version of the various TV shows which focus on life inside prison. The plot was a cluster truck of confusion and random events that made no sense what so ever. The primary focus of this movie seemed to be "YAY prison violence!" Also, Money wanted nothing to do with his wife or kid, but they never dived into why. And at the end of the movie, the kid forgives his dad for choosing to abandon them. Like..what? Again, going back to what I said before, this movie glorifies prison violence. In one of the scenes at the beginning, there is an implied prison r--pe of one of the new inmates. Why? There was zero reason for this, they did it for the stereotype only. Not to mention, for some reason, Money wants to kill the big boss guy. Money then takes over his position and hands the cop a gift - the weapons. Why? I fail to see why this movie exists at all. Nothing about it makes sense. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Dimitris K Ok. Waldau was supreme in his role. In fact all actors were incredible. The director did an excellent job throughout the movie. The score was magnifying all important moments. But the story.. they don't write these anymore my friends. Without spoiling, let me just tell you how incredibly satisfying-moving-captivating-overwhelming was the last scene, which was essentially just an emotional stare. The whole movie was building to that incredible moment. This is what I call perfect. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review J T This movie is a definite must watch. You won’t be disappointed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Tim F World of crime is portrait pretty cool. Depicts also the harsh and brutal side of the American prison system and how it cam make ruthless criminals out of good man. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review Barry M solid cast selection. grounded story Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/27/24 Full Review Read all reviews
