David Cornelius eFilmCritic.com Sidekick improves through every one of its later scenes, building and building to something wildly original. Rated: 4/5 Aug 27, 2008 Full Review Robert Roten Laramie Movie Scope After seeing it, I wonder why someone didn't think of this particular idea before. Rated: B May 29, 2008 Full Review Steve Rhodes Internet Reviews In a perfect antidote to this summer's pretentious, superhero extravaganzas, Sidekick is a sweet, indie spoof of the genre. ... It's consistently cute. Rated: 2.5/4 May 21, 2008 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed One of the best superhero films I've ever seen... Dec 29, 2006 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid A twisted superhero story that has reportedly been purchased for a big-budget Hollywood remake, though this indie version is certainly good enough for multiplexes. Audience Member Great concept, very poorly executed. This is geared toward the comic book crowd about a comic geek who meets a potential superhero. So he trains him, hoping to be his sidekick one day. But he turns into a supervillain instead. Visuals, camerawork, acting, costumes, and much more needed a hell of a lot of work to pull this off. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely reeks of a low budget from its overacting actors to its downright garbage lighting to its lack of extras to its emo Linkin Park-style music. All that said and done, the script is solid. I can totally see why this has been optioned for a Hollywood remake. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked the different take on the genre, a comic reader grooming a man with powers into becoming something more but the ending left a lot to be desired. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member What a waste of time. Nothing about this movie is good the acting is atrocious and the script is a joke. Boo! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Maybe you're not old enough to remember The Power by Frank M. Robinson. ( I understand it's been updated and re-released - they tried to change some of the anacronysms.) That's not the point, really. The book had the most marvelous premise - someone with super powers uses them for ill (unlike X men, Superman, Spiderman, etc. ). The book was so memorable that, fifty years later, when I saw the Indie Movie Sidekick, I immediately thought of The Power. Sidekick is, admittedly, rough around the edges. I understand it was shot with a hand held camera. The acting is, at times, less than professional (except for Baldwin brother Daniel, who eerily sounds like his older sib Alec), and, because it was shot in Canada, several actors occasionally slip and say "aboot" instead of about. But it moves along and engrosses the viewer and is blessedly short (87 minutes) at a time when movies are getting longer and longer. The writer(s) must have read Robinson's classic because the premise is similar. But now other elements are brought in - the comic book subculture of IT nerds, an exegesis of good versus evil, and the stereotypical corporate world. Sidekick provides the perfect counterpoint to the current resurgence of superhero movies. Suffice to say, just as there were surprises in The Power, there are surprises in Sidekick. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review david h WOW, found this one in the super discount bin at the rental shop down the street. Amazing find. Great story, good acting, well produced for the budget. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
