What to Know

Critics Consensus

Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, but her movie's okay - largely thanks to Shannon Purser's work in the title role, which is strong enough to counter an uneven narrative.

Much of the film is cringeworthy, and not in the instructive, empathetic manner of Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade. Go to Full Review

Though the script's characterization of Sierra is at times uneven, Purser figures out her mix of confidence and insecurity. Go to Full Review

It's a candy-coloured and candy-flavoured teen romance that could best be described as pleasant - it's not transcendent but at least it's not The Kissing Booth. Go to Full Review

It’s not completely horrible, but it’s a stupid idea that’s predictable and at times uncomfortable. Go to Full Review

While Sierra Burgess is a Loser presented some important and valuable themes throughout the film, the negligence of them, its turn to banal tropes and the character assassinations are what truly hurt the film. Go to Full Review

The lying to Jamey, the mean girl shenanigans, the fat shaming, and how easily all is forgiven didn’t sit well with me. It wasn’t awful, but I have no interest in watching Sierra Burgess Is a Loser again. Go to Full Review

Helix C Nov 29 The movie was cringe and a complete waste of time. The main character was actually a loser thank you don’t watch it ! See more Karisha M Aug 28 The production and the acting are not the problem of this movie. The problem is that Sierra gets away despite acting in a problematic way, it is not a good message for the youth. The scene where she kisses Jamey without him knowing who was really kissing him made me super uncomfortable... See more Ian M Jan 30 I think the way they don't hold her accountable at all. " oh i am ugly and misunderstood so it's okay for me to act like a beatch " and veronica just forgives her ??? For that complete betrayal and that looser didn't even say sorry ? Like she just made an entire song about a guy not picking her but couldn't say sorry to the friend she wronged. It's like at the end just love matters and no matter how terrible person you had been everyone is just supposed to forgive you because what you are ugly ? Sad ? Misunderstood? I hated it. See more Tim M Jan 9 Sierra Burgess Is a Loser doesn't fully cope with the emotional implications of its source material, but there's otherwise enough teen authenticity to make a case for itself. See more Salma M 10/13/2024 This movie is definitely not what I expected. Sierra Burgess justifies all her terrible actions by her appearance and intelligence, creating the notion that "anyone who is ugly and smart is inherently a good person." Additionally, she is a flat character who doesn't significantly develop, and after ignoring music throughout the entire film, she suddenly creates a masterpiece that makes everyone forgive her, even though she was a terrible person and didn't even apologize. This movie normalizes several behaviors that shouldn't be normalized, influencing teens who may face similar situations. Subplots and secondary characters, who could have saved the movie by being relatable and compelling, are pushed out of the spotlight. Personally, I believe this movie had potential: it had good ideas, a solid cast, interesting characters, and cinematographic support. However, I can't say the same about the final result: Sierra Burgess is a Loser is certainly not "okay." See more Read all reviews
