George D Easily one of the greatest concert films ever made in terms of sheer talent on display. It also features most of the music from the album of the same name, which Prince fans and credible music journalists consider his magnum opus. Other than the movie Purple Rain, this film showcases the genius of a once-in-many-lifetimes artist at the very heights of their powers. It's impossible after viewing to think of another musician with as much singular vision and breadth of virtuosity in songwriting, band-leading, dance and choreography, vocals, guitar, piano and drums. AND he directed it! Also the music seamlessly blends a variety of genres he's known for, including fast funk, soulful slow jams, guitar shredding arena rock, psychedelic dance pop, and everything in between. Plus the splits! And a bevy of highly attractive and scantily clad people, who also dance, sing and perform don't hurt. There are certainly more famous and infamous concert films but there's a strong case to be made that this is by far the most underrated (and sexiest). How could it not be? You don't have to be a Prince fan to recognize he possessed more abilities than just about anyone who ever did it after watching this breathtaking display of pop art. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/23 Full Review michael g I've seen this a least twenty times and I never get bored of it. He (and the rest of his band) is simply amazing. I had this on VHS a long time ago so its cool to see it on Prime. (I purchased it on YOUTUBE). Don't pass this up, one of the best concert films of all time. Michael Duquette Observer Sign O’ the Times is as much a masterpiece on film as it is on record. Apr 6, 2022 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times [The film] was directed by Prince, and he does a good, sound job without finding an answer to the problem of all directors of rock concert films: After you have exhausted the basic repertory of obvious shots and audience reactions, what do you do then? Rated: 3/4 Apr 25, 2016 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Tribune The utopian rocker, whose manner and music promise a blissful, dreamy union of the races and the sexes, doesn`t need a story line to communicate his meanings, which remain by pop standards unusually complex and considered. Rated: 3/4 Apr 25, 2016 Full Review Norman Riley The Crisis When doing what he does best -- perform -- Prince is as exciting as any T.V. or movie personality, but what makes Times as successful as it is are the other elements he surrounds himself with. Nov 27, 2023 Full Review Juan Carlos Coto South Florida Sun-Sentinel Prince should not be allowed behind the camera. Rated: 2/4 Aug 19, 2021 Full Review Benjamin H. Smith Decider ... a sad reminder of how much music lost when Prince Rogers Nelson took the ladder to the big erotic city up in the sky. Jan 24, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
