Maggie Lee The Hollywood Reporter Although the film ultimately achieves its function to expose deep-rooted and far-reaching social injustice, its visceral representation of harrowing and morally repugnant scenes remains unnerving and questionable. Rated: 3/5 Dec 26, 2011 Full Review Tom Keogh Seattle Times The good that "Silenced" has done certainly outweighs its flaws, but there are certainly some of those: character and plot tropes that pad out the story but have little to do with it. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 3, 2011 Full Review Jae-Ha Kim Jae-Ha Kim (Substack) Based on Gong Ji-young's 2009 novel, "Silenced" is a brutal look at the systematic torture of children at a facility for the hearing impaired. Mzz T Not for the faint of heart. This has been on my watchlist for awhile but I've been a bit scared to watch it, because of it's content. This tells the heartbreaking story of institutional sexual abuse of hearing imparied children. I could not take my eyes of this film, there are so emotions that one has to process. I found all the actors to be on point with their delivery. Gong Yoo (Gang In-ho) delivers his part with heartbreak and empathy, especially when he acted only with sign language. The villains (wow!) - capital V! But I have to say it was the children that stole the spotlight. The cinematography is heartbreaking and raw, I could not take my eyes of this film, there are so emotions that one has to process. The storytelling is heartbreaking, horrifying and not over-dramatised. The music scene in the courtroom had me in tears as it conveyed the isolation of the victim. As it was based on true events, it would have been good to see an epilogue, because I was equally appalled when I researched into the background of the case. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/18/25 Full Review Leah S This movie was gut-wrenching. Depicting the abuses, while painful to watch, highlighted the evil there is in protecting predators, sadists and depraved adults. The acting was superb all around. Well done and a must see but beware you need a strong stomach to stay till the end. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/25 Full Review Harir Y The best movie I have ever seen, very beautiful and from the amount of sadness in it I finished it while crying and my eyes were swollen but its story is strong and awareness and sad Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Kairy L This movie is very explicit due to the nature and subject of the film. While watching the film you feel as though you are physically there with them, especially during the trial scenes. It's terrible what is done to these children and the fact that it's based off of a true experience makes it even sadder. Recommend to watch just be aware that there are explicit scenes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Dan B Loved it but it was a difficult watch at times and left me feeling sad at the end Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Alex K A shocking and horrific story. Unimaginable that it is true. It is one of the more explicit movies I have seen, and although I know it is meant to be disturbing due to the subject, there are multiple times where it was too much and I had to stop. I wanted to watch Gong Yoo in another movie after seeing his great acting in Squid Game s2e1. This role was more subtle in performance. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Read all reviews
