      Critics Consensus

Slapface's uneven execution is offset by the thoughtful themes that fuel the monstrous developments in its character-driven horror story.

Cali C No way the ratings are real on this one!!!! People got recruited to do 5 stars..only explanation for the audience rating. This is A TERRIBLE BORING NON SENSE MOVIE. Little puss kid crying through the whole movie with a stupid ending! Can't believe I got suckered into renting this! I want my 3.99 dollars BACK! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/23 Full Review Hugo S A boy befriends a monster inhabiting an old building, while dealing with feelings of grief and loss. But the creature's intentions reveal to be wicked. "Slapface" is a powerful metaphor for child abuse and bullying. And it will leave no one indifferent! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Overall, this is a highly enjoyable scary movie.  It's a film that focuses on the horror aspect of a witch and the horror that can occur in a family home and upbringing.  It's a great concept that has been achieved with a small cast, few locations and a strong story that held my investment right to the end.  Actors August Maturo and Mike Manning deliver very realistic performances, and the film lands its ending on a positive note which I'm sure will leave viewers with a few thoughts of their own. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review zachary k Sometimes people seem willing to forgive a bad movie that has good intentions, which seems to be the case here. This is not a good movie folks, but the critics seem to love it (shocking, I know) Its hard to tell whether its a scripting issue, or an editing issue, but Slapface spends its entire first half careening from scene to scene as if drunk, and the development of the story suffers, leaving us with a very uneven and largely boring slog. Eventually the story evens out a bit, but by then, the allegory we are meant to be moved by has become tedious and predictable. And there is nothing about the witch/monster that is in the least bit compelling - I know the design here is meant to evoke a child's fantasy, but still - uninspired to say the very least. I applaud the effort to make a film about bullying that is not afraid to address difficult themes, and there are a few moments in this movie that do so rather well, but the overall result here is as trope-ridden and flawed as nearly every other film that attempts to pair mental health/trauma with a supernatural element - creating a film that paints the victim as the monster-to-be. (Larry Clark's Bully is a film that tackles this theme and gut punches the viewer in a much more impactful and real way) Also, frankly, if I am meant to believe a child overpowered an entire police station and escaped unharmed, the suspension of disbelief required is a bit too much. Bullying and trauma can have life- shattering, long-term effects, as I know all too well, but I am tired of stories that want us to believe people who endure these things are destined to become the stuff of nightmares - even if we are meant to believe the monster is justified. So, yes to good intentions, but no thank you to yet another film trolling those with adverse childhood experiences for a paycheck. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Honkee T Don't waste your time. Genuinely the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire life. Never before have I been so angry at having my time wasted. It marketed itself as a supernatural horror, and in the end it just turned into a pathetic PSA for domestic violence. "There was no monster, it was internalised domestic violence all along!" Also, why is no one talking about what this means for the plot? If there is no monster, it means a boy singlehandedly slaughtered everyone inside of a police station without any weapons at all, or powers. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/22 Full Review Chad S I would describe this story as a great suspenseful story rather than a horror. It's not a Hollywood style or typical low budget production. It starts out slow, but soon builds and builds and builds to an intense climax, then leaves you hanging and wondering, "What?" There is no happy ending and there is no hero. Which makes this movie shine. Hey, real life has terrible endings and this movie touches that uncomfortable sentiment. Great job to Jeremiah, the Production/Post team and the cast. I applaud and look forward to the next project from this team. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/08/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Director/writer Jeremiah Kipp’s feature hums with a Shirley Jackson vibe as monsters in the mind and from the past clash. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 9, 2022 Full Review Anton Bitel Sight & Sound an ambiguous film of mourning gone wrong, as a neglected boy's transgressive rites of passage play out simultaneously as supernatural tale and psychodrama, with a murderous monster emerging as much from within as from without...
