BadNews R Smart House (1999) Katey Sagal is easily one of my favorite actresses of all time — she’s firmly in my top 10. I first saw her in the Disney Channel Original Movie Smart House, and while the film itself is undeniably corny, it has that distinct Disney Channel magic that makes it both nostalgic and oddly rewarding to revisit. Let’s be honest: Smart House is cheesy. It has those over-the-top, back-and-forth moments that scream late-90s Disney. But that’s exactly what gives it its charm. Watching it now brings you right back to the days when Disney Channel Original Movies were event television — some were good, some were bad, but almost all of them had that nostalgic feeling that still makes you smile. What really elevates this one is Katey Sagal’s performance as PAT, the AI-turned-“mother” of the house. She takes what could have been a silly, one-note role and turns it into something both entertaining and memorable. She nails the balance of being warm, helpful, and then downright unsettling when things take a darker turn. Even when the script gets campy, she delivers her lines with conviction and makes the character come alive. The rest of the cast also did a solid job, selling the concept and bringing the family dynamic to life. Sure, it’s not a perfect movie — far from it — but it’s absolutely watchable and, more importantly, rewatchable. That nostalgic Disney Channel feel, combined with Sagal’s performance, makes it one of the more memorable entries in the DCOM lineup. So while people may roll their eyes at Disney Channel movies for being “too cheesy,” I’d say Smart House deserves some credit. It’s not groundbreaking cinema, but it’s fun, it’s nostalgic, and Katey Sagal elevates it beyond the usual fluff. For me, it’s one I’ll gladly revisit again and again.
