Phil Hoad Guardian Smyrna catches the intoxication and panic of the moment, but its longer-term perspective – as seen in its overarching recipe-book conceit – is sickly sweet. Rated: 3/5 Nov 28, 2022 Full Review Anthony Cecil The Arts Desk For all its good intentions, Smyrna can’t help triggering memories of Europuddings of the 1970s in which a gallery of uninterested stars lent Hollywood or, in this case, Pinewood glamour by flying in to deliver dreadful English dialogue. Aimee I am Greek, therefore the history conveyed in the movie was very moving and emotional for me. I understood the majority of the Greek language spoken in the movie and found myself singing a Greek song from my youth. I wish they did a better job advertising this movie. There were very few people in the theater for such a wonderful film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/11/22 Full Review Anna C Beautiful movie. Yet they depicted the violence that took place but it was stylized and not close-up. And it was balanced by magnificent acting, portaits of hope and inspiration, intimate and lyrical familty scenes and fantastic depictions of the period. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/22 Full Review Child Words cannot describe the history behind what happened to these people. We cannot forget or rewrite history this happened and so much worse for the people of Smyrna. Sad that so many nations turned their cheeks and did not help because it would not benefit them. Shame on these countries including America. Lets not repeat history ever againbut how things look I am questioning humanity. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/22 Full Review george c The movie painted a picture of how Smyrna was a cosmopolitan city before Turkey burned & occupied the city. It also gave insight on how the allied powers put Greece & Turkey against each other in conflict with treaties that they could not enforce Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/22 Full Review Phillip L In a time when many stories of hardship spurred by bias and bigotry are surfacing in in nation, one event has gone largely ignored by the world not just America. The event in Turkey between 1914 and 1922, when the Turkey for the the Turks movement took hold and planned to either exile or exterminate the Christian's, mostly Greek and Armenians has not been recognized. Like the Holocost, the Underground Railroad, Russia and Syria's extermination of their own citizens and Jim Crow movements this happened about 100 years ago. We believe keeping the story alive curbs the chances of history repeating itself. This film puts faces with the story. Even if you don't have relatives who lived through the atrocity, you can still relate to what happens when governments make the wrong decisions. A profound story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/22 Full Review the Paris of the East Well told - well, 2 hours is short for a story that I've heard for 50 years now! Light hearted, sweet moments, excellent props and recreations had me on edge for when they would get to the anticipated horrors! To their credit, the end of the movie switched to live music and scene / CGI comments from all involved with the movie. At least we weren't walking out with a heavy feeling! I hope we get to enjoy it through a rental/streaming deal because the wait was very long for just one showing and I know many who couldn't attend.
