andrey k Rare soviet masterpiece. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Brilliant, laugh-out-loud satire, wonderful acting, and an amazing adaptation of a classic - and deeply subversive (if you're a Soviet Communist) story. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member nebloga rusu klasika Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Effective satire of all things old and new in 1925 Russia. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A very loyal (no dog puns please!) adaptation of a truly excellent piece of satirical literature. Good cinematic trick of a low angle camera to give the audience the point of view of our dog Sharik at the beginning. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member An incredible film. It is very accurate to say that this is a film about a scientist who creates something which becomes a little too much for him. This could easily be the plot of a cheap, b-movie stupid comedy along the lines of 'Nutty Professor'. It's not, though. Instead, it is one of the most unnerving, disturbing, and yet eerily accurate explorations into the meaning of being human. This is a movie far deeper than almost anything I have seen so far. This movie is by far not for everyone. It is, first of all, unpleasant. There is a very small amount of actual violence. It's simply that the ideas that this movie gives rise to, the thoughts that will come into your head if you are at all capable of thinking, are very depressing because you know that they are accurate. Second, it is slow-paced. It requires a lot of thought, and it requires you to view it carefully. This is not a movie you watch with a group of beer buddies with a bucket of popcorn. This is a movie which you devote two hours of your life to, which requires you to think and understand. Lastly, it is a pre-revolution Russian movie. This means that it will be full of cultural hints and allusions which someone who is not Russian or who does not know someone old enough to explain will not get. This will not detract much from the movie though. If you can get this movie with subtitles, do it. I wouldn't recommend a voice-dub though. The acting in this movie is very theatrical. The characters express themselves through their intonations, the subtle nuances to how they speak or laugh or cry. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews
