Peter Bradshaw Guardian Socrates left me wondering if it was slightly underdeveloped as a feature project. But plenty of glossier and more finished films don't have its beating compassionate heart. Rated: 3/5 Sep 3, 2020 Full Review Danny Leigh Financial Times If one coup of Moratto's film is our instant bond with star Christian Malheiros, another is that a film can feel so measured with this much drama in such close quarters. Rated: 4/5 Sep 2, 2020 Full Review Ryan Gilbey New Statesman The film crams a lot of hardship into its 70 minutes, as well as an abundance of humanity. Aug 20, 2020 Full Review Ben Turner The Pink Lens The collision of beautiful aesthetics and ugly reality make for a fascinating dichotomy that sits at the heart of this film; behind Brazil's glossy veneer is, unfortunately, an ugly truth. Rated: 4/5 Aug 31, 2021 Full Review David Nice The Arts Desk There's no happiness to be found here - the boy smiles, winningly, maybe twice in the entire film - but some redemption in the passing beauty of the skilful filmmaking and the charisma of the leading actor, Christian Malheiros. Rated: 3/5 Oct 7, 2020 Full Review Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) Although it was developed and made with the involvement of teenagers supported by a Unicef project, this Brazilian drama is not some rough-and-ready student film. Audience Member Moratto estreia com um filme poderoso e sensível. Christian Malheiros se lança como um ator de primeira e o longa-metragem é precioso em todos os níveis. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I found this on Amazon, it popped up out of nowhere. I clicked thinking I'd just check out the beginning, but once I started I couldn't stop. I was blown away. Small wonder Ramin Bahrani and Fernando Meirelles were producers, it's a stunning achievement from a new director who won the "someone to watch" Spirit Award. Someone to watch for sure Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Raw, harsh and extremely timely, Socrates socially conscious narrative denounces a world where affection and violence intertwine. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member An astonishingly beautiful movie. Perfectly acted and beautifully filmed in the Sao Paulo not seen by tourists. So real it hurts. Definitely a must see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Socrates is an incomplete film. Its result is an emotive, dramatic film, reflecting well the poor life of the protagonist in the faelas of Brazil. But, the ending is inconclusive and needs more time to develop a better movie. That's why it's incomplete. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
