Nicolas J Dec 9 Not deep enough or wild enough, and lacking the charisma or insight the characters needed. It suffers from a "one-take" malaise. I forgot it right after seeing it. I wanted to like it and be excited by a new voice, and as much as I respect her guts, it just didn’t land for me. See more Alex L Nov 22 Woefully juvenile. Director was obviously just riding the tide of her own ideas as to what "the opposition" thinks and would be willing to do. Only "plot twist" happens 15 minutes into the movie, and everything past that point is laughably predictable- when you know one aspect of the ideology, you can guess the rest. In total, this is an exercise in moral self-pleasuring by the director/writers. Not scary, not interesting, poor acting, and the plot is reductive to an extreme. See more Wayne K Oct 4 Soft & Quiet, as the title implies, is the kind of film that sneaks up on you, lulling you into its world before clobbering you over the back of the head. Politics is as about a divisive an issue as there is, but the film’s messages is that it’s not important which way you lean or how far, it’s how you express your views. In a world where everyone likes to demonise anyone who doesn’t believe the same way as them, casting them as hateful and evil if their every opinion doesn’t coincide with theirs, what we need to be able to do is have discourse on all topics. The film shows that echo chamber mentality is harmful and destructive, and the single shot conceit allows to not only witness but feel the steadily escalating tension. I get the feeling that there was no concrete script, more like rough scenes outlines and the actors adlibbed, given it a more realistic, spontaneous feel. It’s a harrowing reminder that horrible acts are often committed by people who fully believe that what they’re doing is justified, and they’d do it again if given the chance. That’s all the positivity I can muster- this was truly a miserable experience, one I have no intention on revisiting. The worst thing a movie can do to me is make me stop caring. Throughout the movie, I knew it was a thriller. And after the strong opening, with the six women outing themselves as bigoted monsters, I thought, “Cool. Either one’s a decent person who’ll rise above, or they all stumble into a situation that kills them all.” Instead, they proceed to get more and more deranged and monsterous to the point where someone innocent dies. Now, I was watching this on stream with a friend. I almost dropped out. The worst thing a movie can do to me is make me stop caring. And that was the point where the movie did just that. I disconnected extremely hard, like, “Are these people going to get ANY justice? Any comeuppance? …No? Okay, I’m done.” And I tuned everything else out from that point on. I wish the director well, I wish the actors well, but my time would have been better spent watching the Garbage Pail Kids movie. See more Read all reviews
