Ben Kenigsberg New York Times The movie impresses, maintaining a sense of anxiety through tight shots and a sound design that favors overlapping voices and constant clatter. Apr 17, 2014 Full Review Farran Smith Nehme New York Post "Soft in the Head'' is drab, ramshackle stuff - up in everyone's face, and finding very little there. Rated: 1/4 Apr 17, 2014 Full Review Ela Bittencourt Slant Magazine Nathan Silver captures the young-adult experience, particularly the agony of first sexual pangs, in films that deftly mix beguilement and repulsion. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 17, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com It's a film that's sad, funny, and features a slew of characters difficult to like as they're viciously realistic in that they seem wholly incapable of making decisions to benefit themselves. Audience Member Soft in the Head is creative in its cinematography and writing, but I could not get past the bitterly unsympathetic portrayal of the main character. We are shown how horrible she is repeatedly, but never really understand why. It almost feels as if the director/writer is angry with her, even with the title of the movie. She exists not so much for her own life but to mess up the lives of others. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Nathan Silver creates a fully realized chaotic, messy and unpredictable world that all but comes totally unhinged. Although the intention seems unfocused, he approaches his two primary characters in such with such steadfast commitment that lack of narrative focus actually ends up being an asset. The movie is reminiscent of a 1970's rambling experimental film. The difference is is that the whole film is so well contained. An unexpected and riveting study of madness that is only silenced in the film's final moments. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
