      Critics Consensus

Slow-moving, cerebral, and ambiguous, Solaris is not a movie for everyone, but it offers intriguing issues to ponder.

Lorenz L One again: an example of a garbage remake of a near-perfect classic, simply because American audiences are scared out of their pyjamas at the prospect of having to (gasp!) read subtitles (or lean another language). Just do yourself a favour and skip this unfortunate object lesson for Bad Reasons for Remakes and instead watch Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1972 masterpiece with its title anglicised as “Solaris” (certified “fresh” at 93% from critics/89% from audience). Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review Micah N Objectively superior in every way to Tarkovski's version (which only partway redeems itself in its last hour). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Dinos K Every time Hollywood tries to copy other countries' masterpieces (mainly France, Scandinavia, Russia and Japan) it fails miserably. If you don't believe it, watch the Russian Solaris Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review Jonathan L It drags, I won't lie. However, it's still very moving. This Awesome hybrid of Interstellar-esque visuals paired with an Inception type predicament is a cinematic experience that I think was ahead of its time. The eery score pairs well with the solemn performance from Clooney and the general psychological/introspective theme, definitely worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Antihrist P Photography is great. Acting is great. Directing is great. But that's it. It haven't even scratched the surface of the book by Stanislaw Lem. The book is one of the best science fiction books of all times with a lot of original ideas which will make you question the very fabric of reality. The movie, on the other hand, is just empty and forgettable. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/08/23 Full Review Andrei K Thanks! well done, guys. Geremy is awesome :-). Please keep working! Possible plot for one of next movies: "hidden agents from future eatrth are trying to help population of another world to escape the earth's mistakes during their middle ages era. But all efforts fail, because the population of that planet in their hearts are alienated from ideas of democracy and equality, to be treated as slaves is much more natural for them". That idea you could find in a Soviet autors book "It's hard to be god" by brothers Strugatskies. All the best to you! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Geoff Andrew Time Out Scripted, shot, directed and edited by Soderbergh with his customary intelligence and assurance, this is perhaps the most ambiguous and cerebrally sophisticated Hollywood movie in nearly three decades. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Anomalous and mesmerising. Oct 19, 2003 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian With audacity and style, Steven Soderbergh has revisited one of Russian cinema's landmarks, and done so very successfully. Rated: 4/5 Mar 25, 2003 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault Like Tarkovsky, and Kubrick before him, Soderbergh has made a philosophical art movie in a sci-fi costume. Rated: A Sep 17, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Solaris” is a psychological thriller told through the stylistic lens of Soderbergh’s camera.
