Linda Barnard Toronto Star Initially seeming so personal, Montreal filmmaker Thomas Burstyn's family examination Some Kind of Love gradually reveals itself to be a relatable documentary. Rated: 3/4 Jun 11, 2015 Full Review Heidy Morales Hye's Musings Some Kind of Love is a film mainly about family relations. It also points to the high needs dementia patients require; the sacrifices families make in such situations. Rated: 3/5 Feb 21, 2021 Full Review Susan G. Cole NOW Toronto Thomas Burstyn's documentary looks at first like an indulgent examination of his own family's intimacy issues. But soon it blossoms into an emotionally charged investigation into the universal themes of familial love, ambivalence and obligation. Rated: 4/5 Dec 18, 2015 Full Review Jay Stone Ex-Press.com It's a bit like Yolanda's apartment, jammed with the bric-a-brac of half-glimpsed ideas. Rated: 2.5 Nov 12, 2015 Full Review Chris Knight National Post As Some Kind of Love progresses, it wanders down unexpected, sometimes unexplained corridors. The results may occasionally exasperate, but they are also deeply moving. Rated: 3/4 Jun 8, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A documentary filmmaker always walks a fine line between doing their subjects justice, respecting their wishes and getting the footage they need to make a good film. Some Kind of Love crosses the line between showcasing and exploitation so far that it is no longer visible creating a highly uncomfortable film to watch. To make matters worse, the subject of Thomas Burstyn's film are not only facinating people who have led incredible lives, they are also his family. This makes his utter lack of respect of their wishes all the more deplorable. His uncle in particular is very outspoken about his distrust of Burstyn's motives in making the documentary, on multiple occations refusing to appear on camera discussing what Burstyn wants. This is clearly a personal journey of some kind for the filmmaker, but his complete disregard for the wishes of those he includes make a it hard to care about anything other than the violation of his family.
