What to Know

Critics Consensus

It covers familiar territory for Sofia Coppola, but Somewhere remains a hypnotic, seductively pensive meditation on the nature of celebrity, anchored by charming performances from Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning.

Richard Brody New Yorker ...one of the great cinematic portraits of a city. Apr 14, 2020 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator Somewhere has its funny moments, and its clever moments, but the blankness and passivity of the central character make it peculiarly remote, as if you were watching it from a million miles away. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Somewhere is like a slow-moving bullet with no clear aim. Rated: D+ Sep 8, 2017 Full Review Erica Richards InSession Film Overall I found it to be an enjoyable but a slow, quiet watch. If you are a fan of Coppola’s work, seek this out... Rated: B- Jul 8, 2024 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault Sofia Coppola is a gifted director: she has clear and present control over mood and milieu; she gets the performance she wants out of Dorff and a much more endearing and revealing turn from Fanning. But the script is undercooked. Rated: B Oct 4, 2022 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Analyzing Somewhere is so difficult, and useless. Tracey D Like watching paint dry Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review Miki T One of my fav of Coppora's film. This is so heartwarming, and I adore Elle's innocence in this film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review David W Somewhere is a meditative look into the effects of celebrity. I would like to have seen a deeper exploration of the main character's psyche. Whether intentional or unintentional, he remains just as enigmatic at the end of the story as he is at the beginning. I would only watch this again if there were nothing better to choose from. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review Ron G I absolutely love Sofia Cappola movies. This is a Hollywood miliue equivalent to the Michaelangelo Antonioni Italian new wave of the sixties. Akin to L'Aventura in it's languidness and expressive landscape. Added treat, the most gorgeous women, thank you Sofia. I loved it. The mystery is in the beholder. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/01/23 Full Review dave s Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is an actor, fueled by fast cars, parties, and strippers. When his pre-teen daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) is left in his custody for an extended period, he is ultimately forced to examine the aspects of his life that are important to him. Sofia Coppola's Somewhere is clearly a Sofia Coppola film – languid pace, minimal dialogue, plenty of lengthy shots, either static or with barely perceptible movement, and characters in search of something that may be beyond their immediate grasp. While her style isn't for everyone (the opening scene alone will turn many viewers off), those with patience will be rewarded with a touching story about the healing properties of love and the insatiable need for redemption. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member From what I remember (watched it from sometime ago), the movie's pace was a little slow, but I think it's a good movie that I'd watch again.
