Leslie Felperin Guardian The biographical details are of far less interest to Collins than the music, and the film will be a particular delight to lovers of Irish folk music, with its keening textures and melancholic tones. Rated: 4/5 Dec 15, 2017 Full Review Mark Matousek Slant Magazine Director Pat Collins's approach to visual composition is more interesting in theory than practice. Rated: 1.5/4 Dec 13, 2017 Full Review Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times More than the story of an individual, the film is a stirring tribute to endangered folk traditions. Dec 7, 2017 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin I admired Song of Granite much more than I 'enjoyed' it. Rated: B- Jul 10, 2020 Full Review Nora Lee Mandel Maven's Nest Using an impressionistic, avant-garde style...its beauty and heartbreaking sense of lost connection to the past expresses much more than the usual corny sentimentalism. Rated: 8/10 Dec 31, 2019 Full Review Brigid Presecky FF2 Media Song of Granite is a unique portrait of a man's life; breathtakingly cinematic in black and white film. J S Profoundly moving and deeply insightful film about a singer, his songs and the land that birthed them both. Extraordinary cinematography with minimal dialogue yields intensely meaningful moments, stitched together seamlessly, if also subtly. Not for everyone. But for those with patience and seeing eyes it is a marvel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Audience Member I loved this film! I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I found it very touching and emotional. It reflects an Irish homeland that my parents grew up in and tells a story that I had heard from many different people growing up. It also is masterfully produced and uses skillful filmmaking to really draw you in. I highly recommend it!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member A quietly stunning, gorgeously shot biopic about enigmatic Irish folk singer Joe Heaney that's as much a tribute to his homeland as the artist himself. Assembled almost wholly as a collection of painterly b&w static shots, this unconventional biography is light on narrative but overflowing with the stark beauty of its cinematography and Heaney's haunting songs.
