Chance Maurice N @Chance-Maurice May 25 Songbird (2020) is a dystopian thriller set during a deadly pandemic where COVID has evolved into a more dangerous virus, forcing people into extreme lockdown and harsh government control. The film mixes romance and survival, following an immune courier trying to save the one he loves in a world filled with fear and restrictions. While the idea is interesting, the execution feels rushed and lacks emotional depth. A bold concept with a powerful real-world theme, but it struggles to fully deliver a strong and memorable story. Maybe not so deep enough of a plot, but had some big hitters like Demi Moore, Bradley Whitford, Sofia Carson, Jenna Ortega, and Alexandra Daddario. This was made during the pandemic, this could have truly been what was to be for all of us if there was immunity for some. It's a dog eat dog world out there. 50/50. People with guns and bad intent. See more SkyRo P @TheMovieSearch 06/08/2025 Songbird (2020) is a dystopian thriller based on the COVID-19 pandemic—but in this version, the virus has mutated into COVID-23. Society has completely collapsed. People are dying in massive numbers, strict lockdowns are in place, and if you’re caught outside, the CDC doesn’t quarantine you—they exterminate you. It’s a terrifying setup where “tag and bag” has become a reality, and the government is more authoritarian than protective. The movie follows immune couriers who can travel freely, marked by yellow bands on their arms. KJ Apa plays one of them, and although he looks noticeably thinner than usual, his performance is solid. Apa has serious star power, and he’s one of the few actors who always brings emotional weight, even in chaotic material. Demi Moore also stars, and honestly, she’s a standout. No matter what she’s in, she carries herself with grace and power. She’s just magnetic. Sophia Carson, too, delivers a surprisingly strong performance. Known mostly for lighter roles, she proves here that she can handle serious material. Get her out of the Disney/comedic bubble, and she’s honestly impressive. But the scene-stealer? Peter Stormare. He’s flat-out terrifying in this movie. His character is disturbingly gleeful about hunting down people, and he brings a creepy intensity that makes your skin crawl. Now, let’s be real—the movie is far from perfect. The script has holes, the pacing can be clunky, and some of the world-building feels underdeveloped. But is it the trainwreck that critics made it out to be? Not at all. I think much of the hate came from the timing—it was made and released during the real-life pandemic, and that was just too soon for a lot of people. Still, Songbird deserves at least a thumbs up. It’s not amazing, but it’s watchable, and at times, even gripping. It’s one of those “decent enough” movies that doesn’t blow your mind, but doesn’t waste your time either. See more Read all reviews
