Critics Consensus

Sophie's Choice may be more sobering than stirring, but Meryl Streep's Oscar-winning performance holds this postwar period drama together.

An infuriatingly bad movie. Go to Full Review

Sophie's Choice is a rare film, literate, deeply moving and gifted with an absolutely awe-inspiring performance by Meryl Streep. Go to Full Review

In other ways the film is just as unsatisfactory as the book, because it's inseparably strapped to basic flaws. The story has no center, no protagonist. To whom does the action of the novel happen? Go to Full Review

Meryl Streep's performance is brilliant but too often back-benched by writer-director Alan J. Pakula's pokey, misguided adaptation of William Styron’s novel. Go to Full Review

For all the significance of the revelations about Sophie's past, it is the interaction between the three central characters that gives the story its strength. Go to Full Review

Jim S @JimStrong3 1d Powerhouse acting all around by all three leads, especially Meryl Streep, who performs a high-wire act of balancing mood, emotion, tricky accents, and foreign languages in an absolutely spellbinding performance. See more Wendy V @MinhPlumb Feb 6 I heard about this movie for years, decades actually. I never watched it because I thought I knew too much about it. It was not what I expected. It was worth all the hype. The perfect movie. Heartbreaking. See more Keith A Jan 13 Meryl Streep really made this film. I've seen a few of her films and this must have been one of the most challenging of her career. She knocked it out of the park. Amazing job. The film is a bit long, I can see why it had to be that length but there are some places where it could have been trimmed a bit. The one thing I wish would have been in the film that wasn't (or at least I never saw/felt it was explained) was the desire to know why two of the three characters stayed around with such a volatile personality suffering from schizophrenia that was being so abusive. Still a very decent film with some very emotional scenes. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Dec 27 Sophie’s Choice remains a powerful but difficult film to revisit today. Anchored by Meryl Streep’s committed performance, the movie explores trauma, memory, and emotional survival with a seriousness that defined its era. While Streep’s portrayal is undeniably strong, her accent can feel distracting at times, and the film’s heavy reliance on dialogue makes it feel long and emotionally draining. Much of the story focuses on repetitive cycles of domestic turmoil, jealousy, and manipulation, which can test a modern viewer’s patience. Where the film truly resonates is in its devastating revelations about Sophie’s past, moments that are heartbreaking and unforgettable. Those scenes give the film its lasting weight and cultural importance. However, the slow pacing and dated storytelling prevent it from feeling engaging by today’s standards. Sophie’s Choice earns respect as a classic, but it’s more admired than enjoyed, best remembered for its historical impact rather than revisit See more Rehan May 11 I don't know what the big deal was with this movie. Bored me to death and people are really obsessed with the 1940s stories, lol See more Horror fan 4 @Horrorfan4life 01/28/2025 The movie is worth the watch because of Meryl Streep. She gives a magnificent performance. Tim Treakle See more Read all reviews
